Fiction writer Manuel Mu\u00f1oz, MFA \u201998, draws inspiration from his upbringing in a Mexican-American farming family<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manuel Mu\u00f1oz, MFA \u201998, is an acclaimed fiction writer and a professor of creative writing<\/a> at the University of Arizona\u2014and he recently won one of the nation\u2019s most coveted honors, an $800,000 \u201cgenius grant\u201d<\/a> from the John T. and Catherine D. MacArthur Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in his prose, Mu\u00f1oz draws on roots a world away from academia: he grew up in a Mexican-American family of farm workers in California\u2019s Central Valley, laboring in the fields while also going to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am very careful when I tell my story, especially when I speak with students, to affirm that it isn\u2019t about \u2018bootstraps,\u2019 but access,\u201d notes Mu\u00f1oz, who attended Harvard on scholarship as a first-generation student before matriculating into Cornell\u2019s highly selective MFA program in creative writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany, many young people have creative drives, ambitions, and dreams, but we don\u2019t all get access. Nothing is improbable if we are actually given equitable opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mu\u00f1oz\u2019s writing<\/a> explores the lives of mothers and sons, U.S.-born citizens and immigrants, young gay men and teenage parents\u2014and grapples with the impacts of racial politics and the limited economic opportunities in the Central Valley region.<\/p>\n<\/div>

His latest work, The Consequences<\/em><\/a>, comprises 10 tales, mostly set in communities of Mexican and Mexican-American farmworkers outside Fresno, CA, in the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLucid and elegantly written,\u201d raves the L.A. Times,<\/em> \u201cThe Consequences<\/em> tells the stories of characters who ache for one another or for ephemeral moments of release; who ache\u2014bodily\u2014from a life spent harvesting the sweetness that will grace other tables.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one story, a recent arrival in the neighborhood joins the women who wait each evening for their men to come home from the fields\u2014always worried about the immigration vans that sometimes take them away for days, or longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen the street fell silent at dusk, the screen doors of the dark houses opened one by one,\u201d Mu\u00f1oz writes, \u201cand the shadows of the women came to sit outside, a vigil on the concrete steps.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mu\u00f1oz has published two other short-story collections\u2014Zigzagger<\/em> and The Faith Healer of Olive Avenue<\/em>\u2014as well as the novel What You See in the Dark<\/em>, a cinematic look at lives unfolding in small-town California in 1959 as the movie Psycho<\/em> is being filmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Says Instinct<\/em> magazine in a review of the novel: <\/em>\u201cMu\u00f1oz\u2019s work is rich with description and so beautifully written that it borders on poetry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual MacArthur Fellowships\u2014which come with no conditions as to how the funds are used\u2014honor luminaries from a wide variety of fields who have demonstrated exceptional originality in, and dedication to, their creative pursuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a few weeks after his win was announced, Mu\u00f1oz returned to the Hill to give a reading at a conference honoring his longtime mentor, Helena Mar\u00eda Viramontes<\/a>, a professor of literatures in English in the College of Arts & Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe was very attuned to where I came from,\u201d he reflects of his studies under Viramontes. \u201cShe knew, without having to delve too deep, what my socioeconomic circumstances were\u2014and also how to help me put all of that into fiction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the MacArthur win was announced, Viramontes reflected on Mu\u00f1oz’s application for graduate study in creative writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cComing from very humble beginnings as a farmworker, here was this young man who is the youngest child of a large family who just by sheer intelligence, talent, and humility gets a scholarship to Harvard, and then decides to apply to MFA programs,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom our application pool at the time I remember his manuscript as being so strong we all agreed he should be admitted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Viramontes blurbed his debut book, Zigzagger<\/em>, calling it, “stunning in voice, lyrical in language, forceful in subject matter.”)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the MacArthur, Mu\u00f1oz won the 2023 Joyce Carol Oates Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also boasts three O. Henry Awards and two appearances in the annual Best American Short Stories <\/em>anthology, among other honors.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI take great pride in how happy others were for me and embrace that it is a recognition for all of us in the literary and scholarly community,\u201d Mu\u00f1oz says of the MacArthur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quite rare for someone who focuses on Mexican and Mexican-American lives and experiences to be lauded with a major recognition like this\u2014so, when it happens, the elation is understandably communal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
