Itchy polyester in a tweed cross-hatch of royal blue, yellow, and lime green.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The novel\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jiminhan.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Han\u2019s second<\/a>\u2014landed on several seasonal \u201cmust read\u201d lists including in the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>, Goodreads, Apple Books, and the<em> L.A. Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">(Serious) New Cook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leah Puidokas Quiroga \u201994<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Arts &amp; Sciences alum, Quiroga studied at the Culinary Institute of America and was a chef at Berkeley\u2019s famed Chez Panisse. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rizzoliusa.com\/book\/9781599621654\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Her co-authored volume<\/a> won the 2023 Best Cookbook Award (in the children, youth, and family category) from the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Handmade arepas! Biscuit-topped chicken pot pie!) while also including painstaking process photos and taking no skills or steps for granted. It\u2019s a delicate balance to pull off cringe-free. Woo \u201994<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woo\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.polisbooks.com\/books\/deep-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">second mystery novel<\/a> continues his series, begun with 2020\u2019s <em>Skin Deep<\/em>, featuring Korean-American private eye Siobhan O\u2019Brien. This time, O\u2019Brien is hired by an elderly billionaire\u2014a genius in A.I. who lives on a private island with his toxic family\u2014who claims that one of his children is an impostor. Is her client losing his grip on reality\u2014or could he actually be right? And might O\u2019Brien have been lured to the island under false pretenses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woo is <a href=\"https:\/\/sungjwoo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the author<\/a> of four novels including <em>Everything Asian<\/em> (2009), which won the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association Literature Award.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An MFA grad of NYU, he has published widely, including in the <em>New York Times<\/em> (in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/12\/fashion\/moms-cooking-comes-between-a-husband-and-wife.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Modern Love<\/a>\u201d section, magazine, and elsewhere) and <em>McSweeney\u2019s<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Violence and Mental Illness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eric Elbogen \u201992<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatry.duke.edu\/profile\/eric-bradley-elbogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arts &amp; Sciences alum<\/a> is on the behavioral sciences faculty at Duke\u2019s medical school and serves as a psychologist at the Veterans Administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His <a href=\"https:\/\/nyupress.org\/9781479801442\/violence-and-mental-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nonfiction book<\/a>, from NYU Press, is subtitled <em>Rethinking Risk Factors and Enhancing Public Safety<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessible to both academic and general audiences, it explores the relationship between violent acts and mental disorders\u2014a connection frequently cited in the media in the wake of a horrific crime, but in many cases without substantiation. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/violence-and-mental-illness-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of &quot;Violence and Mental Illness&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-28929 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/violence-and-mental-illness-A.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/violence-and-mental-illness-A-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/violence-and-mental-illness-A-263x395.jpg 263w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/violence-and-mental-illness-A-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/violence-and-mental-illness-A-167x250.jpg 167w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/11\/violence-and-mental-illness-A-83x125.jpg 83w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And as Elbogen and his co-author argue, that can have dangerous repercussions, by both stigmatizing people with mental illness and ignoring other causes of crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThink of each act of violence like a jigsaw puzzle made up of a number of different pieces,\u201d they write. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen violence occurs, people frequently think the puzzle is formed by one big piece: mental illness. \u2026 The reality is that mental illness is most often not a piece of the puzzle, and when it is, it is a small one. When present, mental illness often links with other puzzle pieces, such as alcohol abuse or poverty. It will inspire many people, especially girls and women, to overcome obstacles to their success.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.katevogl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vogl previously published<\/a> the books <em>Lost &amp; Found: A Memoir of Mothers<\/em> and <em>Iron Horse Cowgirls: Louise Scherbyn and the Women Motorcyclists of the 1930s and 1940s<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mazie\u2019s Amazing Machines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sheryl Haft \u201986<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/545527\/mazies-amazing-machines-by-sheryl-haft-illustrated-by-jeremy-holmes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">picture book<\/a> is aimed at kids aged four to eight, especially those with an interest in STEM-related activities. It stars a girl (and budding engineer) named Mazie McGear, who uses her imagination to create gizmos that solve everyday problems\u2014from feeding the dog to helping her mom carry boxes to waking up a sleepy brother. It offers a contemporaneous account of one of history\u2019s bloodiest conflicts through Crawford\u2019s journal entries and correspondence.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It partly unfolds as daily narrations of her life on the Western Front, but it\u2019s also a multilayered portrait of its author: <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/crawford-war-surgeon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a woman<\/a> resolved to find her purpose and see the world, while also struggling to juggle her roles as a daughter, doctor, and romantic partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m \u2026 so torn between the two sides of the Atlantic,\u201d she wrote to her future husband. \u201cThe work I love, and the people I love.
