To Cornellians who\u2019ve served in uniform, the West Campus facility is much more than just a place to live<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy Shin \u201923, an Army reservist, arrived on the Hill in fall 2021 straight out of basic training. He hadn\u2019t yet finalized his housing plan\u2014and he was happy to learn that there were rooms available at the just-opened Veterans Program House<\/a> near campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI showed up with two duffel bags,\u201d Shin recalls, \u201cstill in my uniform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Shin is a master\u2019s student in public administration at the Brooks School of Public Policy; he\u2019s also the resident adviser for the house, the only student-veteran-oriented program house in the Ivy League. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located at the corner of Stewart and University avenues on the edge of West Campus, the residence is geared toward students who are veterans\u2014though it\u2019s open to anyone with connections to, or an interest in, the military community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home to 26 men and women, the residence features lounges, a library rich with military history and memorabilia, study spots, a workout room, kitchens, and recreation spaces. House alumni and friends have donated a pool table, a piano, and workout equipment; several chess boards are often in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who have lived in the house since its opening<\/a> two years ago have included ROTC students and undergrads with military-affiliated relatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will McCleary III \u201925 transferred to Cornell in January 2023 from a community college after serving four years with the U.S. Marines. For him, the house was a key draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans have long been part of Cornell\u2019s diverse student population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the University\u2019s land-grant mission, Cornell has offered instruction in military science since its inception. It established an ROTC unit in 1917, and has seen its graduates serve in every major conflict since the Spanish-American War. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(A recent oral history project<\/a>, conducted by a CALS senior who’s a U.S. Navy veteran, has collected some of their stories, as well as memorabilia from their time in uniform.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, 73 veterans are actively enrolled as undergrads and 165 as graduate or professional students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a community that has been steadily growing<\/a> over the past decade, as the University has stepped up recruitment of, and support for, military veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2017, Provost Michael Kotlikoff\u2014a longtime supporter of student veterans\u2014announced an initiative to increase<\/a> undergraduate veteran enrollment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also established the Summer Bridge Program to facilitate admissions<\/a> and support the transition to Cornell.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cThese students are usually older than our other undergraduates and have typically transferred to Cornell from another college,\u201d Kotlikoff notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWithin the broader undergraduate community, they have greatly benefited from the anchor of a community with similar experiences, and greatly benefit Cornell by bringing a diversity of experience and thought to the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University\u2019s overall efforts have paid off: the increased recruitment and the establishment of the program house helped Cornell tie for the top spot as the best college for veterans<\/a> in U.S. News & World Report\u2019<\/em>s 2024 rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for Big Red Veterans <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cornell offers multiple resources and programming for student veterans, alumni, faculty, and staff, from the Veterans at Cornell<\/a> admissions site and information hub to the web portal military.cornell.edu<\/a>. The Cornell Military Network<\/a> supports military-affiliated alumni across generations, and the Veterans Colleague Network Group<\/a> is a University-sponsored employee resource to promote veteran advocacy.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Like Kotlikoff, Shin notes that for many student veterans, military service\u2014with its focus on professionalism and discipline\u2014along with at least several additional years of maturity and life experience, sets them apart once they arrive on a college campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe military is not an easy profession,\u201d he says. \u201cYou have to have the grit and the commitment to see it through. You have to get on with the mission\u2014and now our mission is to be good students and find our career path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark Minton \u201923, who served as the house\u2019s first RA, notes that it quickly became a nexus and gathering space for veterans on campus\u2014even for those not living there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has been instrumental in fostering a tight-knit community,\u201d he says, \u201cenabling veterans to find common ground, share experiences, and grow together.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roland Molina \u201922, a former president of the Cornell Undergraduate Veterans Association<\/a> helped establish the house and now serves on its advisory board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeveral founding residents still reside in the house,\u201d he notes, \u201cand newer residents have adopted the house culture of camaraderie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The house offers programming like a networking event, sponsored by the Cornell Military Network, that was held during Homecoming. It has also hosted attendees of an Ivy League Veterans Council conference, and residents have been invited to ROTC balls and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yidi Wang \u201924, a psychology major in Arts & Sciences and a service member in the New York Army National Guard, matriculated on the Hill in spring 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She recalls that her transition to campus life was difficult\u2014until she moved into the program house after her first semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt might be awkward for me, as a 26-year-old, to say I was \u2018lonely\u2019\u2014but I was disconnected from my peers, because they were five or six years younger than me,\u201d she recalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe house seemed to have everything I\u2019d been looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The residents are a tight-knit group, notes ILR student Michael Sanchez \u201923, a former aircraft technician in the Marines and the current CUVA president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe all know each other so well that you can tell if somebody\u2019s having an off day,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can say, \u2018Hey, what\u2019s up? You want to get some pizza?\u2019 and talk it out. People genuinely care for each other. If you live here, even if you\u2019re not a vet, you\u2019re part of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
