White; the assembly of the early faculty and the construction of buildings; the toll of World War I; and much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also highlights a host of notable characters, from naturalist and lecturer Louis Agassiz Fuertes 1897 to notorious student prankster Hugh Troy 1926\u2014and even beloved campus dog Napoleon, a familiar passenger on Ithaca streetcars.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cornell: A History, 1940\u20132015<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Government professor <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/kramnick-memoir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaac Kramnick<\/a> (who has since passed away) teamed up with fellow famed faculty member Glenn Altschuler, PhD \u201976,  for this quasi-sequel to Bishop\u2019s oeuvre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It traces the University\u2019s evolution from the post-World War II era to the then-present day (2015, Cornell\u2019s sesquicentennial year). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/book\/9780801444258\/cornell\/#bookTabs=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The book<\/a> chronicles not only the University\u2019s continued growth but the impact on the institution of the Cold War, the civil rights and women\u2019s rights movements, the war in Vietnam, and more.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"714\" the decades, offering lyrics and sheet music to familiar Big Red tunes such as the \u201cAlma Mater,\u201d \u201cGive My Regards to Davy,\u201d \u201cFight for Cornell,\u201d and the \u201cEvening Song.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gleeclub.com\/store\/a2dra8o9h77j9jvbhem63aput7o2ps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">latest version<\/a>, bearing a carnelian red cover with gold embossing, is available from the Glee Club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s even a 15-song <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gleeclub.com\/store\/songs-of-cornell-cd-2005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">companion CD<\/a>, released in 2005, recorded under the aegis of legendary director Thomas Sokol.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Touchdown<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever snapped a selfie with the bear cub statue near Schoellkopf, you\u2019re aware that the Big Red\u2019s original ursine mascot didn\u2019t involve a costume\u2014or even a human. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/book\/9781501726538\/touchdown\/#bookTabs=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this paperback<\/a> subtitled <em>The Story of the Cornell Bear<\/em>, John Foote \u201974 unspools the tale of the quartet of cubs\u2014Touchdowns I through IV\u2014who served as the football team\u2019s mascot in various seasons from 1915 through the 1930s, and their many antics (like climbing the goalposts at halftime). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 100-page volume also revisits the early 20th-century heyday of Big Red football\u2014when it was not only an athletic powerhouse but a center of student social life.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure noreferrer\">This examination<\/a> of one of the seminal events in University history\u2014the armed occupation of Willard Straight Hall by Black students on parents\u2019 weekend in spring 1969\u2014was penned by Donald Downs \u201971.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Downs was an undergrad when the takeover unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But his book, published by Cornell University Press, also takes a broader view; subtitled <em>Liberalism and the Crisis of the American University<\/em>, it contemplates issues beyond the Hill.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Cornell \u201969<\/em> is an electrifying account of that weekend which probes the origins of the drama and describes how it was played out not only at Cornell but on campuses across the nation during the heyday of American liberalism,\u201d says the publisher\u2014adding that Downs relates how Cornell \u201cbecame the battleground for the clashing forces of racial justice, intellectual freedom, and the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Forever Faithful<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This 280-page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/book\/9781501702600\/forever-faithful\/#bookTabs=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coffee table book<\/a> from 2017 is subtitled <em>Celebrating the Greatest Moments of Cornell Hockey<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does just that, focusing on 24 memorable games that the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams have played, from the opening of Lynah Rink in 1957 to the book\u2019s publication six decades later.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This volume<\/a> by Brad Edmondson \u201981\u2014drawn in large part from oral histories gathered for the 65th Reunion of the Class of 1950\u2014recalls the Hill in the years following World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subtitled <em>How the Greatest Generation Transformed a University, 1944\u20131952<\/em>, it showcases the perspectives of more than 100 alumni and friends, through their photos, letters, diary entries, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMuch would change in student life at the University in the immediate postwar years, and the catalyst was in large part the G.I. invasion,\u201d Professor Kramnick writes in the foreword.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis would coincide with a profound transformation of the very soul of the place, as Presidents Day and Malott changed Cornell from a collegiate \u2018halls of ivy\u2019 training ground for educated gentlemen and ladies, schooled in \u2018gracious living,\u2019 to a world class \u2018research university\u2019 driven by Big Science.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Big Red Recipes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The campus group then called Cornell Students for Hunger Relief compiled this 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellstore.com\/Cornell-Students-For-Hunger-Relief-Big-Red-Recipes?location=2&amp;quantity=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recipe collection<\/a>, whose sales benefit efforts to combat food insecurity in Tompkins County. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comprises more than 100 dishes from faculty and staff in 40 departments across campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They include such comestibles as cabbage crunch salad (by then-CALS dean Kathryn Boor \u201980) and spiced French toast (by Barbara Knuth, then dean of the Graduate School), as well as apple puff pancakes, jalape\u00f1o cheese cornbread, ginger-glazed mahi mahi, spicy basil chicken, chocolate cake, and much more. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"828\"
