The chance to watch a movie the way its creators intended it to be seen\u2014with other humans, on an oversized screen in a darkened room, uninterrupted\u2014has long been a cornerstone of the Cinema\u2019s mission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, more than 50 years after its founding, the Hill\u2019s beloved film organization continues to do just that\u2014in its iconic Willard Straight Theatre and experiences you can\u2019t have from the comfort of your own couch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For generations of Cornellians, the Cinema\u2019s nearly century-old theater on the Straight\u2019s ground floor\u2014originally a venue for live performance\u2014has been a cherished spot for enjoying arthouse fare and Hollywood blockbusters alike. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded as a University film society in 1970, the Cinema was a go-to spot for students, faculty, staff, and locals to view classic and second-run films in an era before DVDs and streaming (and even before VHS and HBO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Cinema is a distraction-free space to experience a work of art.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Molly Ryan<\/strong>, director of Cornell Cinema<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Current undergrads may find it hard to imagine: back then, once movies had completed their theatrical runs, they could generally only be seen if they were broadcast on TV\u2014in a cropped pan-and-scan format, expurgated of adult content, and interrupted by commercials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A perusal of <em>Daily Sun<\/em> ads of the era gleans Cornell Cinema showings of <em>Casablanca, Taxi Driver<\/em>, <em>The Last Picture Show<\/em>,<em> Close Encounters of the Third Kind<\/em>, and many more\u2014not only in the Straight but in Uris and Statler auditoriums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the \u201980s, the Cinema had grown into a sophisticated student-run operation, with screenings held daily during the academic year\u2014and its semesterly schedule, stylishly printed on oversized pages, long graced the dorm room walls of many a Big Red cinephile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide recalls Tevi Troy \u201989, who cites the cult classic <em>Blue Velvet <\/em>and the coming-of-age drama <em>Stand by Me <\/em>as standout films he saw on the Hill. \u201cI\u2019d keep the Cinema\u2019s calendar on the desk where I studied, with the upcoming movies I wanted to see circled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the decades, the Cinema has hosted events and screenings headlined by celebrities from both in front of and behind the camera\u2014including Monty Python star (and A.D. The Cinema also has a long history of bringing affordable second-run Hollywood films to campus. (Set for November 2023: showings of recent summer blockbusters <em>Barbie <\/em>and<em> Oppenheimer<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe offer movies people know they want to see, but we always have a ton of things they didn\u2019t know they wanted to see,\u201d says student staffer Lily Relleke \u201926, who started in ticket and concession sales and now works as a house manager. \u201cI think our biggest strength is we can do both.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We offer movies people know they want to see, but we always have a ton of things they didn\u2019t know they wanted to see.<\/p>\n<cite>Student staffer <strong>Lily Relleke \u201926<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Various <a href=\"https:\/\/cinema.cornell.edu\/donate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fundraising efforts<\/a> are ongoing, including plans to restore the theater\u2019s original seating and century-old murals, as well as the resumption of the \u201cCinema Under the Stars\u201d <em>al fresco<\/em> screenings on the WSH Terrace\u2014a beloved tradition currently on hiatus while money is raised for new equipment, Ryan says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like so much of campus life\u2014and like theaters everywhere\u2014the Cinema saw its operations upended by the pandemic. While COVID-era restrictions forced it to halt in-person screenings for 18 months (virtual programming was still offered), attendance has been steadily rebounding since its reopening in summer 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere were a couple of years\u2019 worth of incoming students who didn\u2019t know where the Cinema was, or that it was a thing,\u201d notes Alex ArbitalJacoby \u201924, a math major who works as a projectionist. \u201cThe turnout of people who show up to the average movie has increased tremendously in the last two years.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image instructor, cites the introduction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellcinema.eventive.org\/passes\/buy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">All-Access Pass<\/a>\u2014which offers unlimited entry for an entire academic year for $25\u2013$40\u2014as a \u201cgame changer.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve been trying to differentiate ourselves from standard movie theaters,\u201d Brewer observes, \u201cas well as from ways people can watch movies on small screens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, the Cinema regularly hosts performance-based and interactive events\u2014like 2023\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/as.cornell.edu\/news\/alumni-filmmakers-share-stories-big-red-red-carpet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">From the Big Red to the Red Carpet<\/a>,\u201d featuring Emmy winners Scott Ferguson \u201982, BA \u201983 (\u201cSuccession\u201d) and Michael Kantor \u201983 (\u201cAmerican Masters\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WSH stage\u2019s original purpose as a theatrical venue lends itself particularly well to screenings of silent films accompanied by live music, which have comprised some of the Cinema\u2019s most widely attended events of late. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>It has even taken the show on the road for seasonal Halloween screenings of iconic early horror films\u00a0<em>Nosferatu\u00a0<\/em>and<em>\u00a0The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari<\/em>\u00a0in Sage Chapel, hauntingly scored live by an experimental rock group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan notes that the Cinema\u2019s varied offerings complement those of other local venues (which include a mall multiplex and a nonprofit, five-screen arthouse downtown).<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" We can think strategically about what films to bring to Cornell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And audiences still regularly flock to WSH to see recent Hollywood and arthouse hits (such as 2023\u2019s packed showings of <em>Everything Everywhere All At Once <\/em>and <em>Get Out) <\/em>enjoy classic flicks, or savor a new film that they may not otherwise have discovered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s super fun to have a job where you get to bring people experiences and get them excited about movies,\u201d says Relleke. \u201cThe Cinema, and theaters in general, offer a communal experience that\u2019s accessible and easy. But the venue also has two 35mm film projectors that require skill to switch from one reel to another at a precise moment\u2014a role that entails intensive training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you watch a 35mm film, you\u2019re seeing it the way the director at the time would have actually seen it,\u201d says ArbitalJacoby. \u201cThere\u2019s a warmer quality\u2014you can see the little grains and imperfections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan, who holds a master\u2019s degree in film studies from Scotland\u2019s University of St. Andrews, has <a href=\"https:\/\/as.cornell.edu\/news\/celluloid-recollections-cornell-cinema-names-new-director\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">helmed the Cinema<\/a> since fall 2022 (succeeding longtime head Mary Fessenden, who led the organization for 35 years, including 27 as director).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We\u2019ve been trying to differentiate ourselves from standard movie theaters, as well as from ways people can watch movies on small screens.<\/p>\n<cite>Volunteer usher <strong>David Brewer<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Since her arrival, Ryan has introduced several features she hopes will become mainstays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, in spring \u201923, she began the <a href=\"https:\/\/cinema.cornell.edu\/film-series\/spring-2023\/new-visions-new-voices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Visions, New Voices<\/a> series, a weekly opportunity to discover a director\u2019s debut film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And to mark the end of that semester, she launched what she aims to be an occasional series of &#8220;mystery&#8221;
