{"id":28110,"date":"2023-10-24T09:36:49","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T13:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=28110"},"modified":"2023-10-24T09:36:50","modified_gmt":"2023-10-24T13:36:50","slug":"women-hockey-gear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/women-hockey-gear\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers Aim for More Protective Women\u2019s Ice Hockey Gear"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Big Red players have contributed to the much-needed design project, based in the College of Human Ecology<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Tom Fleischman<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This story was condensed from <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2023\/10\/researchers-have-designs-better-womens-hockey-protective-gear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>a feature<\/em><\/a><em> in the<\/em> Cornell Chronicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The website for Bauer, one of the biggest names in ice hockey equipment and apparel, lists 26 options for shoulder pads, which offer shoulder and upper torso protection for players in what can be a very fast and dangerous sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those 26 styles for youth and adults, exactly one is made specifically for women. Do is focusing on improving design and function of lower-body (thigh-to-ankle) protective gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elangovan\u2019s involvement in a sport about which she knew very little began after women\u2019s hockey head coach Doug Derraugh \u201991 read a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2022\/03\/collaboration-good-fit-wearable-sensor-startup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Cornell Chronicle<\/em> story<\/a> about wearable sensors that could be used to measure motion, respiration, and fatigue in athletes, with the aim of reducing injuries and improving training and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought, man, that would be interesting for a coach, if you had material in an athlete\u2019s clothing that could actually measure vital statistics and things,\u201d says Derraugh, a former high-scoring forward for Big Red men\u2019s hockey who played professionally in Europe for 13 years before returning to his alma mater in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/10\/2023_1252_NH_009-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Heeju Terry Park, Associate Professor in the Department of Fiber Science &amp; All of these are things that are going to detract from the players\u2019 performance and confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: The Big Red goes up against Union at Lynah in January 2023.
