Big Red players have contributed to the much-needed design project, based in the College of Human Ecology<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The website for Bauer, one of the biggest names in ice hockey equipment and apparel, lists 26 options for shoulder pads, which offer shoulder and upper torso protection for players in what can be a very fast and dangerous sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of those 26 styles for youth and adults, exactly one is made specifically for women. The other major player in hockey gear, CCM, also has just one women\u2019s model advertised on its site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is shocking that the men have so many options and the women have just one,\u201d says Tulasi Elangovan, MA \u201923, a former member of the Performance Apparel Design Lab<\/a>, directed by Heeju Park<\/a>, associate professor of apparel design in the College of Human Ecology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though not a hockey fan, Elangovan decided to make this problem hers, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of her motivation: the fact that, according to USA Hockey, the increase in female registrants in 2017\u201318 outpaced their male counterparts by more than 7 to 1.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just such an inequality in the market,\u201d Elangovan says, \u201cespecially when women\u2019s ice hockey is actually growing at a much faster rate than men\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, while pursuing her master\u2019s in apparel design, Elangovan dedicated many months to researching and designing a prototype for a shoulder pad made especially for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That design, informed by contributions from the nationally ranked Cornell women\u2019s hockey team, is being considered for possible patent protection by the University\u2019s Center for Technology Licensing<\/a>, with whom Park has worked closely for several months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Elangovan graduated, another member of Park\u2019s lab, master\u2019s student Huieun Do, joined the project. Do is focusing on improving design and function of lower-body (thigh-to-ankle) protective gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elangovan\u2019s involvement in a sport about which she knew very little began after women\u2019s hockey head coach Doug Derraugh \u201991 read a Cornell Chronicle<\/em> story<\/a> about wearable sensors that could be used to measure motion, respiration, and fatigue in athletes, with the aim of reducing injuries and improving training and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought, man, that would be interesting for a coach, if you had material in an athlete\u2019s clothing that could actually measure vital statistics and things,\u201d says Derraugh, a former high-scoring forward for Big Red men\u2019s hockey who played professionally in Europe for 13 years before returning to his alma mater in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Derraugh paid a visit to Park to inquire about wearable sensors, and Park told him about Elangovan and her research interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elangovan began her work on the hockey project by interviewing nearly a dozen members of the Big Red women\u2019s team, whom she found supportive, enthusiastic, and helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing that we usually wear equipment designed for men, it\u2019s not as slim-fitting for women or accommodating for the different body types,\u201d says Rory Guilday \u201925, who won gold with Team USA at the 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation Women\u2019s World Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSometimes, if you want more protection, you\u2019ll go for a bigger size,\u201d says the 5-foot-11 Guilday, one of the team\u2019s three captains. \u201cBut then it doesn\u2019t fit somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those sentiments are echoed by fellow team captain Ashley Messier \u201925, who\u2019s 5-foot-3 and plays defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would say the biggest problem is that protective gear just has never been made considering the difference in anatomy, which is kind of crazy considering there\u2019s a pretty big difference,\u201d says Messier. \u201cWe just never really knew any better. We just wore the equipment, not really realizing that it could be a lot more efficient and comfortable and protective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After conducting player interviews, Elangovan invited team members to Human Ecology\u2019s Digital Fashion & Body Scan Research Lab, which has a full-body scanner that uses eight cameras and four eye-safe lasers to capture about 300,000 data points for each scan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Park, the scans pointed to a key difference related to the fit of shoulder pads for men and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe realized that in people of the same body height, the female torso is shorter than the male torso,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a statistically significant difference that plays a critical role in enhancing protection, mobility, and comfort for female players.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elangovan did numerous scans for each of the participating players; those images helped her come up with a women\u2019s shoulder pad design that she thinks will offer a better fit for the contours of the female body, along with greater protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou want to make sure that the gear that you\u2019ve given the players can protect them from all sorts of impact; that\u2019s the only way that these players can actually perform at their maximum capacity,\u201d she says. \u201cOtherwise, they\u2019re going to be worried about slippage of gear, or something getting caught in another player\u2019s stick, or the puck getting somewhere it shouldn\u2019t. All of these are things that are going to detract from the players\u2019 performance and confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
