Based on our (unscientific) Homecoming exercise, it\u2019s the campus, the community spirit, the food, and\u2014above all\u2014the people<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat makes Cornell feel like home to you?\u201d That\u2019s the question we asked revelers during Homecoming 2023<\/a>. It was a follow-up to our previous year\u2019s exercise, the wildly popular \u201cWhat Does Cornell Mean to You\u2014In Five Words or Less?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Cornellians<\/em> booth during the Crescent Lot\u2019s Fan Festival prior to the Saturday football game, alumni and students lined up to write their answers on brightly hued sticky notes\u2014and many also recorded their responses on video (see below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In exchange for jotting down their memories via Sharpie, they received one of Homecoming\u2019s most coveted pieces of swag: a gray-and-red-striped knit beanie, sporting the Cornellians<\/em> logo and topped by a fashionable pom-pom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more than 300 responses formed a neon pastiche of Big Red spirit on the wall behind our booth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(And we could have gotten scores more\u2014but we ran out of hats! Thanks to those alumni and students who still contributed their thoughts, even sans beanie.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the notes cited multiple factors that make Cornell homey to the author\u2014and there were a number of common themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFriends\u201d was the winner, by far\u2014noted more than 100 times\u2014and the related response of variations on \u201cthe people\u201d had 60-plus mentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s where I met my best friends.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll the amazing people I\u2019ve met.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe friends who became family.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFriends who believe in me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpending time with friends on the Slope.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
