Known as the \u2018mother of media psychology,\u2019 Brothers was beloved for promoting mental health\u2014and cheerfully lampooning herself<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For five decades, American psychologist and media personality Joyce Bauer Brothers \u201947 brought mental health issues into the public eye with charisma and lighthearted humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Popularly known as Dr. Joyce Brothers, she wrote syndicated advice columns, hosted radio and television programs, appeared in movies, and even parodied her psychologist persona on shows such as \u201cThe Simpsons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, Brothers (who passed away<\/a> in 2013) is the focus of an exhibit on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housed in Kroch Library\u2019s Hirshland Exhibition Gallery, \u201cDr. Joyce Brothers, Mother of Media Psychology\u201d features documents, photographs, and artifacts from Brothers\u2019s personal collection, which she started donating to the library in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibit runs through late August 2024\u2014so alumni returning to the Hill for Homecoming, Commencement, Reunion, or a casual visit will have the chance to see it in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brothers double-majored in home economics and psychology in what\u2019s now known as the College of Human Ecology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her student days are well-represented in the exhibit, which includes an orientation term paper, registrar card, and graduation portraits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her dissertation for her doctorate in psychology at Columbia is also featured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The bulk of the exhibit showcases Brothers\u2019s work in print publishing, radio, television, and film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It includes scripts and viewer letters for her first TV show in 1958\u2014through the use of technology harkening back to Brothers\u2019s 20th-century heyday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA living room in the center of the gallery has an old television playing a loop of Dr. Joyce Brothers\u2019s show,\u201d says curator Fredrika Loew \u201912, MA \u201916. \u201cThere\u2019s also a bunch of rotary phones, and, when you pick them up, you\u2019ll hear clips of her audio answering somebody\u2019s questions on air.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To liven up the exhibit space, Loew is encouraging visitors to dress up in \u201950s or \u201960s attire.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be fun because that\u2019s what Dr. Brothers was,\u201d Loew says. \u201cShe was taking something serious like mental health and making it approachable in the comfort of your own living room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loew, who is the Dr. Joyce Brothers project archivist, says she hopes the exhibit will entice researchers to explore the psychologist\u2019s expansive multimedia collection<\/a> at the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHundreds of cubic feet of material cover 1955 to 2010,\u201d she says, \u201cand pretty much anyone with an interest in media psychology, psychology in general, pop culture, women in media, and other topics could come and use this collection.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
