Her latest album snagged a Grammy nomination\u2014and she once scored a Cheerios commercial starring Grumpy Cat<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheryl Engelhardt \u201902 was in the midst of a meditation retreat when the nominees for the 2023 Grammy Awards were scheduled to be announced. A musician and composer<\/a>, she was hopeful that her album The Passenger<\/em> would be a contender in the category of New Age, Ambient, or Chant Albums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resisting the temptation to ditch the session\u2014as it happened, a meditation on miracles\u2014she turned off her phone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But just minutes before it was to start, a fellow attendee rushed up and shared the news:\u00a0Engelhardt was nominated<\/a>. She made a quick, ecstatic call to her mother before the lights dimmed and she and 2,000 others took their seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd then I had to just be with myself for two hours,\u201d recalls Engelhardt, who lives in New York\u2019s Hudson Valley. \u201cIt was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Passenger<\/em><\/a> <\/em>is Engelhardt\u2019s third foray into the new age genre, and her seventh album overall. Notably, it had a strong connection to the Grammys even before it was nominated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A voting member of the Recording Academy, Engelhardt had planned to attend the 2022 ceremonies in L.A. with her best friend and musical collaborator. But he died of cancer shortly before the scheduled trip, and the Grammys were ultimately postponed due to COVID concerns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engelhardt opted to travel west anyway\u2014by train, alone, using the journey to process her grief and channel it into her music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Passenger<\/em>\u00a0(which ultimately didn\u2019t win the Grammy) was produced entirely during that nine-day round trip\u2014mainly within Engelhardt\u2019s tiny train cabin, with occasional sessions in the dining and observation cars. Created using just her computer and a tiny keyboard, it was a significant departure from her usual layering of synthesized and acoustic elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engelhardt mixed the album in her newly renovated home studio\u2014which was featured in a December 2022\u00a0New York Times\u00a0<\/em>story about musicians<\/a>\u00a0who built their own soundproof facilities during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cInitially,\u00a0The Passenger<\/em>\u00a0may seem like a quite sad album,\u201d\u00a0a review<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0New Age Music Guide<\/em> observes. \u201cThen you will realize that sadness is just one of the feelings in the mix, where the most powerful is gratitude. Gratitude for the people around us (and even the people who are not around us anymore!), gratitude for being on this wonderful trip, and gratitude for being alive and able to create. … It is, simply put, a jewel.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To listeners who aren\u2019t fans of the genre, the term \u201cnew age\u201d may conjure the gentle melodies and nature sounds that accompany massage sessions or yoga classes. But Engelhardt posits that it has far more to offer beyond relaxation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen done correctly,\u201d she says, \u201cnew age music gives you space for whatever emotion you need to experience at the moment\u2014to let that emotion arise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up in Stamford, CT, Engelhardt sang in school choirs, performed in musical theater, and started piano at age three. In the College of Arts & Sciences, she double majored in music and in biology and society, aiming to work in marine science\u2014but gravitated toward classes in scoring and editing, where she\u2019d bring videos to life with her music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her first job out of Cornell was researching mussels in the Delaware River with the U.S. Geological Survey. But during a seasonal break, she landed a gig composing music for digital marketing videos for a Vatican-owned hotel, a job that came with lodging in a Roman monastery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had my own Rapunzel-like turret,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI thought, \u2018This is a little bit cooler than being underwater.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relocating to just outside NYC, she changed her professional focus to writing music for the screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She took any jobs she could get\u2014mostly scoring amateur horror films\u2014before landing a staff position with a company that edits commercials.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, she began working in a \u201cjingle house\u201d\u2014a studio that composes background music for commercials\u2014where she scored ads for brands like Lysol and Lowe\u2019s. Her favorite: a\u00a0Honey Nut Cheerios commercial<\/a>\u00a0with viral sensation Grumpy Cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She remains an active commercial and film composer\u2014for\u00a0much bigger clients<\/a>\u00a0than in her B-movie days.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cI write to support whatever the story is, or whatever energy the company wants the viewer to feel,\u201d Engelhardt explains. \u201cThat\u2019s what the music can help elevate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to scoring, before working in the new age genre she spent more than a decade recording and touring as a singer-songwriter in the soft rock-pop vein of Sheryl Crow and Sara Bareilles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was her first fully instrumental album,\u00a0Luminary<\/em><\/a>\u2014which she recorded during a two-week artist residency in Greece\u2014that made Engelhardt a number-one new age artist on iTunes and Amazon.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She topped the digital charts again with her second new age album. Titled A Seeker\u2019s Slumber<\/em><\/a>, it opens with a nod to Engelhardt\u2019s Cornell years: a slow-building, energizing track, laden with harmonized vocals and piano, called \u201cIthaca.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
