This young woman is certainly tenacious, if that\u2019s what you\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book earned Schumacher the Thurber Prize for American Humor\u2014making her the first woman to win it, and putting her in the rarefied pantheon of such past recipients as former \u201cDaily Show\u201d host Jon Stewart and superstar memoirist David Sedaris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure epistolary format) in the trilogy\u2019s second entry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/550580\/the-shakespeare-requirement-by-julie-schumacher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Shakespeare Requirement<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Praised as \u201ca very funny lesson on the frustrations and machinations of academic life\u201d by the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, it follows her harried antihero\u2019s adventures as the reluctant chair of his dysfunctional department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he\u2019s pitted against a formidable economics chair hell-bent on gutting the humanities, Fitger tries to rally his English colleagues around a departmental vision statement\u2014only to become the target of a highly publicized \u201cSave Our Shakespeare\u201d campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide has-text-align-center is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p><em>Dear Committee Members<\/em> earned Schumacher the Thurber Prize for American Humor\u2014making her the first woman to win it.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Schumacher has closed out the series with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/730658\/the-english-experience-by-julie-schumacher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The English Experience<\/em><\/a>, in which Fitger begrudgingly agrees to chaperone an eccentric cadre of undergrads on a study-abroad trip to London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Published in August 2023, the tale offers glimpses of Fitger\u2019s more sympathetic side: he can\u2019t help starting to care for his pupils, who include a claustrophobic sleepwalker with an arrest record, a young woman who has never strayed far from her beloved cat, and a student who repeatedly decamps for solo trips to the continent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cIt feels a bit like a divorce or a death to be done with this guy, because I\u2019ve been with him for a dozen years,\u201d observes Schumacher, chatting from her home in St. Paul, MN. \u201cBut I don\u2019t want my character to wear out his welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Schumacher is careful to point out that she never portrays real people or scenarios, her fictional and highly fraught Midwestern school\u2014aptly dubbed Payne University\u2014has served as a self-deprecating mirror for countless fans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly all her book-related correspondence, she says, is from fellow academics who see themselves in various scenes\u2014even ones she\u2019d assumed were too far-fetched for real life. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"705\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople will say, \u2018I know a person who did that,\u2019 or \u2018That happened in my university,\u2019\u201d says Schumacher, who teaches English and creative writing at Minnesota. \u201cIt\u2019s a pressure-cooker environment\u2014and pressure causes people to behave in unusual ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Delaware native whose dad (Frederick Schumacher \u201942) was also an alum, Schumacher studied Spanish and creative writing at Oberlin before eventually landing in NYC as an editorial assistant for a medical publishing company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a piece she wrote for a small literary journal was included in the annual <em>Best American Short Stories <\/em>anthology, she matriculated into Cornell\u2019s highly selective MFA program in creative writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a miraculous thing,\u201d Schumacher recalls, \u201cto go from working nine-to-five in a job I didn\u2019t really care for, wondering what the heck to do with myself, to being surrounded by people who wanted to talk about books and what they were writing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It was a miraculous thing to go from working nine-to-five in a job I didn\u2019t really care for to being surrounded by people who wanted to talk about books and what they were writing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As both a writer and reader, Schumacher has always been drawn to works that delve into the \u201cwackiness factor\u201d of personal and professional life. To which the agent replied: \u201cSo, you\u2019re a comedian?
