Julie Schumacher, MFA \u201986, closes out her satirical series with The English Experience,<\/em> in which a study-abroad trip goes off the rails <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an author and professor best known for satirizing higher education, Julie Schumacher, MFA \u201986<\/a>, is often asked if she\u2019s afraid to go to work. In fact, when the first book in her current trilogy was published, Schumacher\u2019s husband\u2014who, like her, teaches at the University of Minnesota\u2014joked that he was glad they had different last names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schumacher has been lovingly-but-brutally roasting the absurdities of academia since 2014, when she published her bestselling epistolary novel Dear Committee Members<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hailed by Kirkus<\/em> as an \u201cacid satire of the academic doldrums,\u201d the book unfolds through a series of passive-aggressive recommendation letters penned by her blustery protagonist, English professor Jason Fitger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether he\u2019s nominating a colleague for a prestigious chairmanship or bolstering a student\u2019s law school application, the disenchanted Fitger can\u2019t resist adding his sardonic spin to every correspondence.<\/p>\n<\/div>

For many colleagues, Schumacher\u2019s satirical portrait of academia rings hysterically\u2014and perhaps painfully\u2014true.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMs. Vivian Zelles has asked me\u2014three days before your application deadline\u2014to recommend her to your January residency program at Bentham, and herewith I oblige,\u201d he huffs in one letter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in another: \u201cI\u2019ve known Ms. deRueda for eleven minutes, ten of which were spent in a fruitless attempt to explain to her that I write letters of recommendation only for students who have signed up for and completed one of my classes. This young woman is certainly tenacious, if that\u2019s what you\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book earned Schumacher the Thurber Prize for American Humor\u2014making her the first woman to win it, and putting her in the rarefied pantheon of such past recipients as former \u201cDaily Show\u201d host Jon Stewart and superstar memoirist David Sedaris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, Schumacher again placed Fitger center stage (though without the epistolary format) in the trilogy\u2019s second entry, The Shakespeare Requirement<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Praised as \u201ca very funny lesson on the frustrations and machinations of academic life\u201d by the Washington Post<\/em>, it follows her harried antihero\u2019s adventures as the reluctant chair of his dysfunctional department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he\u2019s pitted against a formidable economics chair hell-bent on gutting the humanities, Fitger tries to rally his English colleagues around a departmental vision statement\u2014only to become the target of a highly publicized \u201cSave Our Shakespeare\u201d campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear Committee Members<\/em> earned Schumacher the Thurber Prize for American Humor\u2014making her the first woman to win it.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Now, Schumacher has closed out the series with The English Experience<\/em><\/a>, in which Fitger begrudgingly agrees to chaperone an eccentric cadre of undergrads on a study-abroad trip to London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Published in August 2023, the tale offers glimpses of Fitger\u2019s more sympathetic side: he can\u2019t help starting to care for his pupils, who include a claustrophobic sleepwalker with an arrest record, a young woman who has never strayed far from her beloved cat, and a student who repeatedly decamps for solo trips to the continent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt feels a bit like a divorce or a death to be done with this guy, because I\u2019ve been with him for a dozen years,\u201d observes Schumacher, chatting from her home in St. Paul, MN. \u201cBut I don\u2019t want my character to wear out his welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though Schumacher is careful to point out that she never portrays real people or scenarios, her fictional and highly fraught Midwestern school\u2014aptly dubbed Payne University\u2014has served as a self-deprecating mirror for countless fans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly all her book-related correspondence, she says, is from fellow academics who see themselves in various scenes\u2014even ones she\u2019d assumed were too far-fetched for real life. <\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cPeople will say, \u2018I know a person who did that,\u2019 or \u2018That happened in my university,\u2019\u201d says Schumacher, who teaches English and creative writing at Minnesota. \u201cIt\u2019s a pressure-cooker environment\u2014and pressure causes people to behave in unusual ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Delaware native whose dad (Frederick Schumacher \u201942) was also an alum, Schumacher studied Spanish and creative writing at Oberlin before eventually landing in NYC as an editorial assistant for a medical publishing company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a piece she wrote for a small literary journal was included in the annual Best American Short Stories <\/em>anthology, she matriculated into Cornell\u2019s highly selective MFA program in creative writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a miraculous thing,\u201d Schumacher recalls, \u201cto go from working nine-to-five in a job I didn\u2019t really care for, wondering what the heck to do with myself, to being surrounded by people who wanted to talk about books and what they were writing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As both a writer and reader, Schumacher has always been drawn to works that delve into the \u201cwackiness factor\u201d of personal and professional life. Discovering shared idiosyncrasies and experiences can be profoundly cathartic, she says, offering relief that one isn\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And despite her protagonist\u2019s unsavory qualities\u2014\u201che\u2019s obstreperous, obnoxious, insecure,\u201d she admits\u2014Schumacher and Fitger share concerns about the challenges facing many budget-strapped colleges and universities across the country, including shrinking humanities programs and the reduction of tenure-track positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, as the New Yorker <\/em>observed in its review of The Shakespeare Requirement<\/em>: \u201cSchumacher blends satire with righteousness; she seeks to circle collegiate wagons against external threats to the liberal arts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, like Fitger, Schumacher has been known to mine comic material from the least likely of circumstances\u2014including on her way home from NYC after the Thurber Prize ceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At LaGuardia, the box containing her new trophy set off the metal detectors, prompting some pointed questions from the TSA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI said, \u2018It\u2019s a humor award,\u2019\u201d she recalls. To which the agent replied: \u201cSo, you\u2019re a comedian? Tell me something funny.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
