{"id":24625,"date":"2023-08-10T09:07:35","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T13:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=24625"},"modified":"2023-08-10T09:17:50","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T13:17:50","slug":"punk-reunions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/punk-reunions\/","title":{"rendered":"With Punk Reunions, Alums from the 1990s Rock On"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Summer 2023 saw the third-ever gathering\u2014complete with raucous tunes and head-banging memories<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: Arts &amp; Sciences alum Melanie Lefkowitz \u201995 is editor-in-chief of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell Chronicle<\/a><em>\u2014and the drummer in the \u201990s \u201criot grrl\u201d band Pon.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Melanie Lefkowitz \u201995<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">For members of the Ithaca 1990s punk community, \u201cdo it yourself\u201d was a guiding ethos\u2014whether it meant publishing a zine, putting on a show, or starting a band. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I really liked about the punk scene,\u201d says A.J. Bouchie \u201999, \u201cwas that when someone said they were going to do something, they actually did it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Decades later, Bouchie and others channeled that DIY spirit in a new direction: reunion planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of that \u201990s local music scene, which included numerous Cornellians, held their first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/ithacapunkreunion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Punk Rock Reunion<\/a> in Ithaca in 2016, followed by another in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This summer (July 2023) saw a third, which drew several dozen alumni and others to see old friends, visit campus with spouses and children\u2014and, of course, play and hear the music that had brought them all together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe best part is that everyone here is still a punk,\u201d says Jaime Villamarin \u201993, who performed at the 2022 and 2023 shows with his current band, the NYC-based Absolute Garbage.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"488\" height=\"763\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-2-A.jpg\" alt=\"A poster for the punk rock group I FARM\" class=\"wp-image-24842 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-2-A.jpg 488w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-2-A-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-2-A-253x395.jpg 253w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-2-A-320x500.jpg 320w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-2-A-160x250.jpg 160w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-2-A-80x125.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><figcaption>A vintage show poster.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople\u2019s ideals haven\u2019t really changed, no matter what kind of clothes they wear. those who couldn\u2019t make it wanted another chance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic scuttled plans to gather five years later\u2014but the two recent events each brought a mix of bands to Hopshire Brewery in nearby Dryden, with future reunions on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The best part is that everyone here is still a punk.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Jaime Villamarin \u201993<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad people still want to come back and do it,\u201d says Bouchie. \u201cAs long as people want to come back, I\u2019ll keep doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the 1990s, an alternative music scene was on the rise in Ithaca and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indie-label punk bands such as NOFX, Rancid, and Bad Religion (led by Greg Graffin, PhD \u201903) were drawing a national fanbase, and acts like Green Day and the Offspring were bringing the sound into the mainstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"509\" height=\"661\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-3-A.jpg\" alt=\"A poster for a punk rock concert\" class=\"wp-image-24843 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-3-A.jpg 509w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-3-A-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-3-A-304x395.jpg 304w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-3-A-385x500.jpg 385w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-3-A-193x250.jpg 193w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/08\/punk-poster-3-A-96x125.jpg 96w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/><figcaption>The shows\u2019 PR was often handmade.<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Reunion organizer Mike Choi \u201997 encountered the 1990s punk scene through Just About Music (JAM), then a themed floor of a West Campus U-Hall and now its own North Campus program house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPunk rock is a subculture for people who don\u2019t really fit into the mainstream,\u201d he says. \u201cWe were a bunch of outcasts trying to find each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ithaca, punk shows were often held in the hot, crowded basements of Cornell co-op houses, heralded by hand-scrawled posters tacked around campus. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes band members had just learned how to play their instruments\u2014or were still learning as they performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe complete rebelliousness of it was awesome,\u201d says Villamarin, who was the original drummer for the punk trio I Farm as an undergrad.  \u201cIt worked because punk was getting popularized on TV. Kids in every town knew punk. These were the people I was drawn to. They had their own sense of style.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merging bands from Cornell, IC, and the local community was key\u2014as was connecting in real life in an era before social media and YouTube, says Arun Chaudhary \u201997, whose set with the Nogoodniks at the most recent reunion featured his 10-year-old daughter on backup vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img how to press records,\u201d says Chaudhary, who was also the bassist and lead singer of I Farm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, people are already armed with some of the things that we would have had to
