In an ongoing effort, Cornellians are being asked to recall their student days for an oral history<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cornell\u2019s Asian American Studies Program (AASP) has launched an oral history project\u2014and it\u2019s seeking alumni who are willing to share their stories. The goal: to explore not just the program\u2019s genesis in the 1980s, but the on-campus experiences of students of Asian descent from the mid-20th century onward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by history professor Derek Chang and supported through crowdfunding<\/a>, the project kicked off in summer 2022\u2014in conjunction with the 35th anniversary of the AASP, the oldest program of its kind in the Ivy League. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An oral history session was held at Reunion that year for the classes of the 1970s and 1980s, and again at Reunion \u201923.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to capture the experiences of Asian and Asian American alumni, and the role they\u2019ve played in the history of the University,\u201d says Christine Bacareza Balance, an associate professor of performing and media arts and the AASP\u2019s director. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re also tracking the history of the Asian American Studies Program\u2014particularly, the things Asian American students were doing on campus prior to its founding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, according to University statistics<\/a>, Asian Americans make up about 20% of the student body. Additionally, the international students who comprise roughly one-quarter of enrollment include many from Asian countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as Chang notes, while students of Asian descent are now well represented demographically on the Hill, that wasn\u2019t the case decades ago\u2014and in mid-20th century America, many Asian Americans felt invisible on campus as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe reality for those students was very different than for students now,\u201d says Chang. \u201cWe\u2019re interested in hearing about their lives, because there\u2019s a dearth of scholarship and information around those experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Channeling his \u201cinner desire to be a social historian,\u201d he says, he\u2019s been conducting interviews with fellow alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has been particularly inspired by stories of advocacy and activism that often challenge the suffocating stereotypes around being a \u201cmodel minority.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s critical that we surface these stories, so that there\u2019s a better understanding and we can go deeper than these archetypes,\u201d Marvin Chang notes. \u201cWhat\u2019s the trajectory of the Asian American student experience at Cornell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such efforts, he says, have spurred positive changes\u2014such as the establishment of campus programs and resources, student groups, and courses of study\u2014that are benefitting new generations of students. (Those younger Cornellians include his son, current ILR major Dashiell Chang \u201924.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others who have participated in the oral history project include John Kuo \u201985, an Arts & Sciences alum and life member of the University Council who shared memories of his student activism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI felt many times that I was isolated and alone,\u201d he recalls. \u201cThe fact that today, there are these programs\u2014and that students can find kinship, camaraderie, and a safe space to be who they are\u2014is fabulous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
