He built a dam to secure hydropower for the mills, forming a swampy pond upstream. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six decades later, a higher dam created today\u2019s 53-million-gallon lake\u2014supplying water to the expanding campus and powering a <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/hydroelectric-plant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hydroelectric plant<\/a> in the gorge below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s (mostly) shallow!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The vast majority of the 17-acre lake only ranges from 6\u201310 inches deep\u2014though one channel hugging the north shore is about 4\u20137 feet deep and another along the south measures about 4\u20135 Some have even ziplined over Hemlock Gorge at Beebe\u2019s east end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It was home to the Hill\u2019s first facility devoted to women\u2019s sports!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A women\u2019s boathouse was built on Beebe\u2019s south shore in 1900. It boasts 3,700 acres, with 17 miles of on-campus pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It ecology, natural resources, plant science, environmental engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also home to for-credit phys ed courses, including fly fishing and bass angling.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It appeared in silent films of the early 20th century!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>From 1915\u201319, Ithaca\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/whartonstudiomuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wharton Studios<\/a> used the area\u2019s gorges and other natural features as dramatic backdrops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They shot scenes on and around Beebe for films like <em>The Love Lute of Romany<\/em> and serials including <em>The Mysteries of Myra<\/em> and <em>The Eagle\u2019s Tang \u201970 Welcome Center<\/a>, it boasts a dramatic view of Beebe from its terrace\u2014and welcomes thousands of visitors each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And \u2026 it helped inspire a shift in the Chinese language!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a century ago, Hu Shih 1914 and two fellow students were boating when they capsized and swam to shore. Each penned a poem about the experience\u2014two using classical Chinese, Hu the more colloquial tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Years later\u2014inspired in part by that experience\u2014he helped lead a linguistic revolution in China, fueling widespread literacy as millions shifted to a more accessible vernacular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2023\/04\/new-beebe-lake-seating-area-honors-hu-shih-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A plaque<\/a> along Beebe\u2019s shore pays tribute to Hu; a North Campus residence hall bearing his name opened in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Want to learn more?
