Get into the swim with these 16 details you may not know about East Hill\u2019s beloved body of water!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beebe Lake and its environs offer a cherished respite from the bustle of campus. Students, staff, faculty, and alumni canoe and kayak on its waters, walk and jog its trails, and relax on its shore.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But how much do you know about Big Red\u2019s beloved body of water? Read on for 16 fascinating facts!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It traces its origin to Ezra himself!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the late 1830s, Ezra was working for a local owner of plaster and flour mills along Fall Creek. He built a dam to secure hydropower for the mills, forming a swampy pond upstream. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six decades later, a higher dam created today\u2019s 53-million-gallon lake\u2014supplying water to the expanding campus and powering a hydroelectric plant<\/a> in the gorge below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s (mostly) shallow!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The vast majority of the 17-acre lake only ranges from 6\u201310 inches deep\u2014though one channel hugging the north shore is about 4\u20137 feet deep and another along the south measures about 4\u20135 feet in depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s named for Ezra\u2019s employer!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The moniker of Ezra\u2019s long-ago boss: Jeremiah Beebe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1899, the year after the second dam created the lake, Cornell\u2019s trustees officially named it after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a Reunion hotspot!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each June, scores of returning alumni kayak and canoe on the lake. Some have even ziplined over Hemlock Gorge at Beebe\u2019s east end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It was home to the Hill\u2019s first facility devoted to women\u2019s sports!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A women\u2019s boathouse was built on Beebe\u2019s south shore in 1900. Sadly, it was destroyed by fire in 1926.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elaborate floats once battled on its waters!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n

In the 1940s and \u201950s, Beebe was the site of a whimsical race held as part of the annual Spring Day celebration, as fraternities and other groups did good-natured battle on its waters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the homemade floats were motorized, a few included pyrotechnics\u2014and most tried to attack or sabotage their rivals, testing their seaworthiness.<\/p>\n<\/div>

An annual prank used to turn it (big) red!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A 1960s-era jape saw Beebe dyed a carnelian hue each spring, when members of Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity would put red dye into the stream above\u2014\u201cin an attempt,\u201d the Daily Sun<\/em> then noted, \u201cto preserve a tradition of unknown origin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s part of a vast nature network!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1977, the University consolidated oversight of its natural areas\u2014including Beebe\u2019s water, wetlands, and woods\u2014under what\u2019s now known as Cornell Botanic Gardens<\/a>. It boasts 3,700 acres, with 17 miles of on-campus pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It got a massive makeover in time for its 150th birthday!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the 1980s, the University launched a major project to dredge, restore, and beautify the lake and its environs\u2014creating new paths and protecting their role as an active floodplain. <\/p>\n\n\n

Located just west of Sackett Bridge, it\u2019s named Werly Island (for longtime Botanic Gardens supporter Charles Werly 1927). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formed out of gravel and silt dredged from the lake during the 1980s restoration, it was engineered to deflect the flow of Fall Creek, allowing sediment to be carried further downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its historic footbridge connects to trails\u2014and the law!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The scenic stone structure\u2014site of many a Cornellian marriage proposal\u2014is named for University benefactor Henry Woodward Sackett 1875, a prominent lawyer and expert in libel law (as well as a colonel in the New York State cavalry). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of Sackett\u2019s cases became legal precedents that have protected journalists from contempt of court for refusing to reveal their sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a living lab and classroom!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beebe\u2019s waters and shore are regularly used by classes in such fields as ecology, natural resources, plant science, environmental engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also home to for-credit phys ed courses, including fly fishing and bass angling.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It appeared in silent films of the early 20th century!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From 1915\u201319, Ithaca\u2019s Wharton Studios<\/a> used the area\u2019s gorges and other natural features as dramatic backdrops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They shot scenes on and around Beebe for films like The Love Lute of Romany<\/em> and serials including The Mysteries of Myra<\/em> and The Eagle\u2019s Eye<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>

It (sort of) has a beach!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the run-up to its 25th Reunion, a class chose an improvement to Beebe as its fundraising project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dedicated in 1991, \u201cClass of 1966 Beebe Beach\u201d is now graced by fully grown sycamore trees and other greenery. Like Werly Island, the land was built up from silt dredged from the lake in the \u201980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s officially part of the University\u2019s \u2018front door\u2019!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, the starting spot for campus tours was moved from Day Hall to a renovated space in the former Noyes Lodge at Beebe\u2019s western edge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Called the Martin Y. Tang \u201970 Welcome Center<\/a>, it boasts a dramatic view of Beebe from its terrace\u2014and welcomes thousands of visitors each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

And \u2026 it helped inspire a shift in the Chinese language!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

More than a century ago, Hu Shih 1914 and two fellow students were boating when they capsized and swam to shore. Each penned a poem about the experience\u2014two using classical Chinese, Hu the more colloquial tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Years later\u2014inspired in part by that experience\u2014he helped lead a linguistic revolution in China, fueling widespread literacy as millions shifted to a more accessible vernacular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A plaque<\/a> along Beebe\u2019s shore pays tribute to Hu; a North Campus residence hall bearing his name opened in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
