<em>(Photo provided)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cVeep\u201d is just one of Savage\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0767242\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dozens of credits<\/a> stretching back to the mid-1990s. On TV she has had recurring roles as everything from a Brazilian exchange student (\u201cSweet Valley High\u201d) to an undead CEO (\u201ciZombie\u201d) to a ruthless but sympathetic Hollywood executive (\u201cEpisodes\u201d); she has guest-starred on \u201cThe West Wing,\u201d \u201cCold Case,\u201d \u201cTwo and a Half Men,\u201d \u201cModern Family,\u201d \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm,\u201d and many more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her movie roles include Will Ferrell\u2019s therapist and love interest in <em>Step Brothers<\/em> as well as appearances in <em>Dinner for Schmucks<\/em>, <em>Sleeping with Other People<\/em>, and the 2022 Netflix release <em>Plus\/Minus<\/em>, costarring Lili Reinhart and Luke Wilson.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Among Savage&#8217;s other upcoming projects are an untitled Netflix comedy film starring Jonah Hill and a voice role in the animated show &#8220;The Freak Brothers&#8221; for the streaming service Tubi. Her writing credits include episodes of the HBO sketch comedy show \u201cFunny or Die Presents\u201d and a satirical short\u2014a mock political commercial about abortion rights released in the 2012 presidential election year\u2014she also directed and co-starred in with Kate Beckinsale and Judy Greer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Californian at Cornell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Los Angeles native who \u201cdidn\u2019t know how to put on a scarf\u201d when faced with her first Ithaca chill, Savage majored in government on the Hill. \u201cBut I did a lot of theater while I was there,\u201d she says. \u201cI was kind of a secret theater person with a more grounded, realistic major.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was during her time abroad in Seville\u2014with some space from her usual academic life\u2014that she resolved to pursue a career in entertainment; she vividly recalls breaking the news to her adviser back on campus. \u201cHer face sort of went blank, and there was this uncomfortable silence for about 30 seconds, and we just stared at each other,\u201d Savage says. \u201cAnd then she was like, \u2018Okay, well, <em>after<\/em> that, do you think you\u2019re more interested in law school or business school?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I was kind of a secret theater person with a more grounded, realistic major.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Back home in L.A., Savage took classes at the Groundlings (the famed improv school and performance troupe) and tried to break into the business. \u201cI definitely had dark days where I was like, \u2018Screw everybody, I\u2019m going to law school,\u2019\u201d she recalls with a laugh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut for the most part, I felt like I always had some forward momentum. And I hustled and worked really hard; I attacked the entertainment industry in an organized, very academic fashion. I submitted my pictures and got into student films; I did a blind mailer for a commercial agent and got one. I think I had a strange amount of confidence that probably wasn\u2019t\u2014that I <em>know<\/em> wasn\u2019t\u2014justified, that pushed me through, especially in the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her own TV show<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, TruTV debuted \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/trutv.com\/shows\/im-sorry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I\u2019m Sorry<\/a>,\u201d a comedy series that Savage created, wrote, and starred in. (The show is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.) In one episode, she cracks so many (very funny) off-color jokes to her fellow parents at student pick-up time, her daughter\u2019s school institutes a policy against salty language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another, she finds herself in a parenting quandary when, after showing her five-year-old <em>The Sound of Music<\/em>\u2014a film she vaguely recalls as entirely benign\u2014the little girl becomes terrified that Nazis are hiding in her closet. (It only gets worse when Andrea, scrambling for a way to explain the Third Reich to a preschooler, tells her that Hitler was like Voldemort in <em>Harry Potter<\/em>, only real.)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI admire Andrea\u2019s comic vision in \u2018I\u2019m Sorry,\u2019\u201d says David Feldshuh, a professor of performing and media arts who taught Savage as an undergrad, and who himself is a Pulitzer-nominated playwright. \u201cIt\u2019s unpredictable, irreverent, and edgy, but also grounded in attention to credible detail from everyday life. Without trying to teach or preach, Andrea shows us something about our contemporary comedy of manners\u2014what we try to hide and what won\u2019t be hidden. And it\u2019s laugh-out-loud funny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Without trying to teach or preach, Andrea shows us something about our contemporary comedy of manners\u2014what we try to hide and what won\u2019t be hidden.<\/p><cite><strong>Professor David Feldshuh<\/strong>, on Savage\u2019s show \u201cI\u2019m Sorry\u201d <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After two seasons and twenty episodes, \u201cI\u2019m Sorry\u201d is in limbo. Shooting on season three was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and\u2014despite good reviews and a solid fan base\u2014due to upheaval at TruTV, production may never restart. As Savage explains, the concept for \u201cI\u2019m Sorry\u201d sprang from a point in her career familiar to many actresses in their 40s: she found herself constantly being offered lackluster, one-dimensional roles as the stereotypical \u201cmom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018Why are none of these funny? They\u2019re all harried and sexless. No one in these relationships seems to like each other,\u2019\u201d she recalls. \u201cAnd I thought, \u2018I\u2019ve got some stories that I think would be funny in the retelling. And I want to show that a woman who\u2019s 40, who happens to be a mom\u2014one, it\u2019s not the only thing that defines her.
