{"id":22601,"date":"2023-06-14T10:40:46","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T14:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=22601"},"modified":"2023-06-14T10:40:47","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T14:40:47","slug":"pride","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/pride\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Big Red Pride\u2014in June, and All Year Long"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">More than four decades after its debut, Cornell\u2019s LGBTQIA+ alumni group is thriving<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By\u00a0<strong>Alexandra Bond \u201912\u00a0<\/strong>&amp;\u00a0<strong>Lindsay Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When Art Leonard \u201974 and Mark Schwartz \u201974 set out to start an organization for gay and lesbian alumni in 1979, they faced a hurdle: since many Cornellians hadn\u2019t been out during their time on the Hill, finding potential members to invite was difficult. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A letter published in the <em>Alumni News<\/em>\u2014seeking \u201cgay alumni all over the country who would be interested in getting to know other gay Cornellians\u201d\u2014received just a handful of responses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few months later, in June 1980, some of those new members gathered to march down Fifth Avenue in<strong> <\/strong>New York\u2019s annual Pride event. Carrying a red cloth banner with \u201cCornell Alumni\u201d in white letters, they were met with boisterous cheers from onlookers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlumni started joining us; they just stepped in from the sidelines when they saw our sign,\u201d Leonard recalls. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t very many, but every additional person knew someone else who was interested in our group and could spread the word. After that, our social gatherings got bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past four and a half decades, that small cadre has grown into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cornelluniversity.imodules.com\/s\/1717\/cc\/club.aspx?sid=1717&amp;gid=60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell Pride<\/a>, a thriving network of thousands of Big Red grads\u2014as well as faculty, staff, parents, and friends\u2014around the world. For many of our alumni, it\u2019s about supporting LGBTQ students in ways that they themselves didn\u2019t feel supported while they were at Cornell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally called the Cornell University Gay and Lesbian Alumni Association (CUGALA), the group in 2020 changed its name to the more inclusive Cornell Pride LGBTQIA+ Alumni Association, or Cornell Pride for short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As board member Dustin Liu \u201919 observes: \u201cWhat I have found most heartwarming is how the organization itself continues to change to meet our current moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first alumni groups of its kind in the U.S.,<strong> <\/strong>it was founded about a decade after Cornell\u2019s Student Homophile League was created (in 1968) as just the second gay rights organization on an American campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>What I have found most heartwarming is how the organization itself continues to change to meet our current moment.<\/p>\n<cite>Board member <strong>Dustin Liu \u201919<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In the late \u201990s, the group\u2014by then named CUGALA\u2014established a fund for the library to purchase gay- and lesbian-related content, a precursor to Cornell\u2019s renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/rare.library.cornell.edu\/human-sexuality-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Sexuality Collection<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last decade or so, it has fundraised and advocated for on-campus facilities such as the LGBT Resource Center and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scl.cornell.edu\/residential-life\/housing\/campus-housing\/upperlevel-undergraduates\/program-houses\/loving-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Loving House<\/a>, an LGBTQIA+ program house located in Mews Hall on North Campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, Cornell Pride held its first Reunion on the Hill, and the event has continued to thrive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was a huge step for us,\u201d says Tai, who explains that many of the group\u2019s older members attended the University at a time when discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people was rampant in the U.S. \u201cIt was a chance for alumni to reconcile bitter experiences and see that there is an opportunity for them to reclaim what it means for them to be a Cornellian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With chapters in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., Cornell Pride traditionally holds dozens of get-togethers each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to LGBTQ people, the term \u2018chosen family\u2019 came out of the social isolation one would face if they didn\u2019t have a lot of family support\u2014or even outright family rejection,\u201d Tai observes. \u201cA lot of us found our chosen family at Cornell, and that has extended into our life as alumni.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic, programming went online\u2014with Zoom events like a discussion of dating in the era of social distancing and a virtual Pride party with a raffle for rainbow-themed Cornell swag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all here for each other,\u201d says current president Kim Gillece \u201904. \u201cIt\u2019s so meaningful to see an alum pop up on a Zoom or come to a Cornell Pride event and say, \u2018This is my first time back in X number of years\u2019\u2014and it was the first time they felt they had a group to go to. It\u2019s really powerful to hear that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Like many organizations, Cornell Pride is continuing to hold some online events post-COVID\u2014such as an April 2023 virtual discussion with queer historian and author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/historian-ryan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hugh Ryan \u201900<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group also hosts the annual Steven Siegel \u201968 Awards\u2014named in honor of the late Cornellian who was a CUGALA leader for some three decades, as well as the first openly gay recipient of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/volunteer\/awards\/rhodes-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank H.T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Award<\/a>. The Siegel Award has historically been given to a distinguished alum in the LGBTQIA+ community, with categories recently added for young alumni and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A lot of us found our chosen family at Cornell, and that has extended into our life as alumni.<\/p>\n<cite>Former president <strong>Olivia Tai \u201908, BA \u201910<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCornell has really grown in the resources it provides students, and also in making alumni aware of those resources\u2014recognizing that everyone had a different lived experience on campus,\u201d says vice president Brian Balduzzi, MBA \u201918.\u00a0Since Pride members span generations, he notes, they can \u201cconnect and talk about what our experiences were, what is currently offered, and what the future might hold.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Balduzzi also points out that as Cornell Pride has evolved, its scope has widened to embrace such constituencies as international students\u2014who may face discrimination in their home countries\u2014as well as people who are transgender, non-binary, or gender nonconforming, and may be harmed by the current spate of anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation in states around the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe see you, we identify with you, and we want you to be part of us,\u201d Balduzzi says. \u201cOur mission is to make sure that when folks leave campus and become alumni, they feel supported.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Big Red alumni at NYC Pride in 2019 (provided).
