class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>WVBR traces its roots to the 1935 founding of the Cornell Radio Guild by <em>Daily Sun<\/em> staffer Ruth Press Karr \u201935 and agricultural professor Charles Taylor, an early radio pioneer on the Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <em>Sun<\/em> article at the time, the guild was created with the aim of giving students on-air broadcast experience and offering community listeners \u201ca glimpse of the abilities of the University\u2019s students in the realm of entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvbr.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WVBR<\/a> is owned and operated by the Cornell Media Guild (CMG), which also runs an online stream,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellradio.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CornellRadio.com<\/a>, and a recording label, <a href=\"https:\/\/electricbuffalorecords.bandcamp.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Electric Buffalo Records<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Read on for a dozen fascinating facts about WVBR\u2014and nearly nine decades of student-run broadcast history!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>It has generated an alphabet soup of call letters!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first programming aired on WESG, a Cornell-affiliated station co-owned with the <em>Elmira Star-Gazette<\/em> newspaper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end of that partnership in 1940 spelled a new era\u2014literally\u2014as the University began operating it as WHCU, Home of Cornell University, 870 on the AM dial. It was later rebranded as WVBR\u2014Voice of the Big Red\u2014broadcasting at 640 on the AM dial via transmitters installed atop several residence halls throughout campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>Its headquarters included a \u2018cow palace\u2019!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The station\u2019s broadcast home has moved several times, from the former pottery studio in the Straight to 227 Linden Avenue in Collegetown to 957-B Mitchell Street\u2014a space shared with the New York Holstein Association, and fondly known as the \u201ccow palace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>Its audience grew along with its signal!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1958, WVBR began broadcasting at 93.5 FM\u2014where it can still be found today\u2014from a 250-watt transmitter atop a 50-foot tower on the roof of Phillips Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(The station received one of the first commercial FM licenses granted to a student corporation.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signal strength quadrupled the following year with a 1,000-watt transmitter; in 1962, a 150-foot tower was built on Hungerford Hill near East Hill Plaza, tripling the class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>It was the first in the region in stereo!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1966, WVBR-FM became the first station in the southern Finger Lakes to begin stereophonic broadcasting as it shifted to a new transmitter, a dual-polarized antenna, and stereo equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>Its modern studio comes courtesy of a famous alum!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, a gift from one of WVBR\u2019s best-known alumni, political and sports commentator <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2013\/02\/keith-olbermann-79-helps-wvbr-move-new-digs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keith Olbermann \u201979<\/a>, enabled CMG to purchase its current home at 604 East Buffalo Street, doubling the size of the studio facilities and modernizing its With the higher fidelity of FM, it played mostly classical music in the 1960s until shifting to contemporary rock in 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following college trends, it moved into progressive rock, top 40, and (in the 1990s) \u201cReal Rock Radio.\u201d In 2018, it rebranded as \u201cIthaca\u2019s Alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bound for Glory<\/a>,\u201d created and hosted by Phil Shapiro, MA \u201969. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadcast from the Anabel Taylor caf\u00e9 since 1967, it\u2019s the longest-running live folk program in North America, with more than 1,500 shows. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>(Since the pandemic, \u201cBound for Glory\u201d has been airing reruns and has not announced a return to live broadcasts.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acts well-known in the folk community who have appeared on the show include Christine Lavin, Aztec Two-Step, Chris Smither, Bill For example: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvbr.com\/blackvoices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Voices on the Hill<\/a>\u201d has given a platform to University and community leaders; \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvbr.com\/afterhours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Talk of the Town<\/a>\u201d takes deep dives into local and national headlines; and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvbr.com\/bigredbanter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Red Banter<\/a>\u201d discusses all things sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\">And &#8230; t<strong>he studio was once commandeered for an infamous student prank!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 1952, in a Cold War-era jape gone <em>way<\/em> too far, 10 masked pranksters bound and gagged four staffers and aired fake bulletins about an escalation of the
