A glorious Ithaca day set the stage for ceremonies honoring the accomplishments of the Big Red\u2019s newest alums<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picture-perfect weather\u2014replete with sunny skies and moderately warm temperatures\u2014smiled on Cornell\u2019s 155th graduating class on Memorial Day Weekend, as 3,900 undergraduates and nearly 5,000 graduate and professional students received their degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in recent years, the festivities were split into two consecutive ceremonies, with graduates and their families attending one or the other according to their college or school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, both featured the traditional academic procession from the Arts Quad onto Schoellkopf Field, with grads, faculty, and staff in full regalia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the Class of 2023\u2014most of whom had their first year interrupted by the pandemic\u2014heard a heartfelt message<\/a> from President Martha Pollack, who likened their journey to that taken by the heroine of The Wizard of Oz<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd like Dorothy, you kept going,\u201d she said, \u201ceven as you met challenges along the way\u2014some of which you\u2019d never imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual PhD recognition ceremony<\/a> was held in Barton Hall later that afternoon, as Kathryn Boor \u201980, dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate education, and others honored the nearly 350 new recipients of the Ithaca campus\u2019s highest academic degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commencement Weekend also included the ROTC commissioning ceremony<\/a> in Statler Auditorium, with 26 graduates (21 from Cornell and five from nearby institutions) receiving commissions and officially beginning their military careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of particular note: Claudia Pietrus \u201923 became the first Cornell ROTC member to be commissioned into the U.S. Space Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And during Senior Convocation<\/a> in Barton Hall, the grads were entertained by the Big Red Band, student dance groups, and more. This year\u2019s speaker\u2014as always, chosen by the senior class\u2014was actor, comedian, and physician Ken Jeong, known for such films as The Hangover<\/em> and the TV series \u201cCommunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t predict where life is going to go, so you have to be open to possibilities,\u201d he said. \u201cBe fearless, be adaptable. That is my challenge to you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
