Cupp \u201900"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">\u2018I came up through academic, intellectual conservatism,\u2019 says the popular pundit, who\u2019s unafraid to challenge her own party<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Lindsay Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On most Wednesdays, S.E. Cupp \u201900 is in her Connecticut home, exchanging emails with her editors at CNN. The TV host and political commentator\u2014an outspoken voice of practical conservatism on the network since 2013\u2014is fleshing out what to cover on her next segment of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/shows\/se-cupp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SE Cupp Unfiltered<\/a>,\u201d which she records on Thursdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a fun conversation,\u201d Cupp says on a sunny day in rural Upstate NY, where her family has a weekend home. \u201cI want to give them, ultimately, what they want\u2014and they, ultimately, want me to do what I\u2019m passionate about that week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday morning, Cupp writes her script\u2014a roughly four-minute monologue\u2014and sends it to her editors. By the time she\u2019s showered and dressed, her copy is ready; she enters her home studio, adorned with memorabilia including a McGraw Tower statuette and her Cornell diploma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cupp looks into the camera, and in one take, she\u2019s done. In another, she skewered Florida governor Ron DeSantis for delivering an \u201canti-wokeness\u201d speech in South Carolina while his state was reeling from severe storms. And in a rare break from politics, she used the platform to kick off Mental Health Awareness Month in May 2023 by talking candidly about her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/opinions\/2023\/05\/04\/se-cupp-unfiltered-mental-health-vpx.cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">battle with anxiety disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfiltered\u201d is a largely solitary project, Cupp says\u2014and majorly scaled back from its beginnings as a daily program on HLN, then as a Saturday show on CNN (it was bumped in 2020 for the White House\u2019s weekly COVID briefings). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s certainly nothing like her breakout role at CNN in 2013, when she was recruited for a revamped version of the political debate show \u201cCrossfire\u201d alongside former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, left-leaning commentator Van Jones, and former Obama Administration advisor Stephanie Cutter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(She also formerly hosted \u201cS.E. Cupp\u2019s Outside with Insiders\u201d for CNN Digital, where the avid hunter, fisher, and camper ventured into the great outdoors with political heavyweights like Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\">A familiar face on TV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the dispatched feel of \u201cUnfiltered,\u201d Cupp is hardly on an island. When she\u2019s not live in the CNN studios for panels, town halls, and political commentary several times a week (and often several times a day), she\u2019s a nationally syndicated columnist, including a longstanding gig with the <em>New York Daily News<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s a frequent guest on podcasts and panels, including <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2023\/04\/panelists-good-journalism-can-help-combat-divisions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at Cornell<\/a> (where she serves as an advisory member of the nonpartisan <a href=\"https:\/\/iopga.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute of Politics and Global Affairs<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cupp is also a familiar face across other TV networks\u2014including as a former guest host on ABC\u2019s \u201cThe View\u201d alongside her best friend, TV personality and author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CsfMFEfNP9t\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meghan McCain<\/a>; as a frequent panelist on HBO\u2019s \u201cReal Time,\u201d<em> <\/em>hosted by fellow alum Bill Maher \u201978; as the lone conservative on a liberal roundtable on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cThe Cycle\u201d; and as a host for Glenn Beck\u2019s independent network, GBTV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind the scenes, she has served as a consultant for Apple TV+\u2019s \u201cThe Morning Show\u201d (starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon), as well as the Aaron Sorkin drama \u201cThe Newsroom\u201d on HBO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her decade and a half as a commentator, Cupp has become (as she puts it) a \u201cRepublican apparatchik\u201d: a passionate defender of traditional conservatism, the values of which she sees as fixed, regardless of who\u2019s in the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFiscal responsibility, strong national defense, self-reliance\u2014those are the things that appealed to me,\u201d Cupp recalls. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t social issues, there definitely weren\u2019t cultural wars, and it wasn\u2019t demagogues like we have today. I came up through academic, intellectual conservatism. I believed in Hayek, and Rand, and de Tocqueville. But the September 11 terrorist attacks altered her trajectory, flooding her with a sense of patriotism and instilling a desire to be of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her instinct was to enlist in the military; her parents urged her to reconsider. What about the NYPD? Again, her parents\u2019 protective instinct took over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had no skills other than writing\u2014but I wanted to <em>do<\/em> something,\u201d she says. \u201cSuddenly, politics were very important. Pretending the grownups will take care of it, and that I could just ignore it and focus on sports, movies, music, and pop culture, seemed ludicrous after 9\/11. So, I said, \u2018Well, the only thing I can do is write.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\">A voice for conservatism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cupp says she got \u201csucked into the news\u201d of the post-9\/11 era, and\u2014especially in NYC\u2014felt compelled to wear her politics on her sleeve. Her friend and fellow alum Brett Joshpe \u201902 felt similarly\u2014and, as the only right-leaning friends either of them had in the city, they joined forces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were used to defending our politics and explaining ourselves,\u201d Cupp said on CSPAN in 2008, \u201cand confronting people who were shocked to learn that they had been working with, or living next door to, or attending a Met game with Republicans.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In pockets of time between work and grad school, the duo penned 2008\u2019s <em>Why You\u2019re Wrong About the Right: Behind the Myths\u2014The Surprising Truth About Conservatives<\/em>, which led Cupp to her first big break: a spot on CNN\u2019s \u201cMorning Joe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The calls kept coming; Cupp appeared anywhere that would host her, from MSNBC to Fox News to Al Jazeera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing a young, conservative female in Manhattan, I think I was looked at as something of an exotic zoo animal,\u201d Cupp says with a laugh. \u201cThat was a curse, too, because I had to prove that I wasn\u2019t just a novelty\u2014that I had some substance, some depth. In it, Cupp\u2014who identifies as an atheist in the introduction\u2014makes the case that left-leaning media outlets have marginalized the Christian-based values held by most Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s currently at work on her third book, again using her platform to shine a light on what she sees as a misunderstood topic: this time, mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summer 2021, Cupp says, she had a \u201ctotal mental breakdown.\u201d<em> <\/em>After years of suffering from intrusive thoughts that the atrocities she wrote and spoke about at work\u2014genocide, war, mass shootings\u2014were certain to happen to her family, her anxiety came to a dramatic head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I had to prove that I wasn\u2019t just a novelty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing a journalist is tough, because I\u2019ve seen too much,\u201d Cupp observes. \u201cSomeone could never say, \u2018That\u2019s never going to happen to you.\u2019 Well, how do you know? I\u2019ve covered it 20 times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cupp immediately sought professional help\u2014and made her personal crisis the focus of her <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/columnists\/2021\/8\/11\/22618931\/s-e-cupp-anxiety-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">next column<\/a>. She then took an extended break, while pledging to remain open about her struggles.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy journey is nowhere near complete\u2014but I\u2019m not going to hide it, because it\u2019s not something to be ashamed of,\u201d Cupp says. \u201cThere are so many people who need help, and don\u2019t feel like they can ask for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Illustration by Seung Yeon Kim \/ Cornell University.
