Lisa Sasaki \u201997 is helping to shepherd the high-profile new Washington, D.C., institution into existence<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Lisa Sasaki \u201997 was tapped in March 2021 to serve as interim director of the Smithsonian American Women\u2019s History Museum, she knew she was taking on a daunting task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The job was, as she puts it: \u201cto build a museum that\u2019s going to be around for as long as there\u2019s an America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, planning any museum from the ground up\u2014not to mention one that will stand among the iconic Smithsonian institutions on and around the National Mall in Washington, D.C.\u2014is a long and involved endeavor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a quick process; it\u2019s one you have to be very, very thoughtful about,\u201d says Sasaki<\/a>, who had spent the previous five years as director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though the museum was established through legislation enacted by Congress<\/a> in December 2020, Sasaki estimates it will be at least a decade before it\u2019s constructed, filled, and open to visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the project\u2019s first challenges is to select a site on (or just off) the Mall, an area already packed with marquee buildings\u2014and situated on a flood plain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the facility is expected to endure for decades and even centuries to come, planners must consider future environmental impacts and the ongoing effects of climate change. Proximity to transportation, nearby restaurants, and other Smithsonian museums also heavily factor into the site selection, Sasaki notes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, Sasaki is working to fulfill the initial guidelines for the museum set forth by Congress, which declared the creation of an institution devoted to women\u2019s contributions as \u201cnecessary to more accurately depict the history of the United States,\u201d given that \u201chistorical accounts, monuments, memorials, and museums disproportionately represent men\u2019s achievements and contributions and often neglect those of women.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The act goes on to cite examples\u2014such as the fact that 82 of the 91 people depicted in the U.S. Capitol\u2019s National Statuary Hall are male, and that a study of American history textbooks found that just 10 percent of their content is devoted to women\u2019s achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than being frustrated by the museum\u2019s extended timeline, Sasaki embraces it\u2014noting it will allow her team to \u201ctake a step back and ask some of those big fundamental questions.\u201d As curators contemplate which items to display\u2014of the 157 million the Smithsonian currently holds\u2014they\u2019ll be soliciting input from women across the country about the stories they\u2019d like to see preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re doing this with<\/em> America,\u201d she says, \u201cnot just for<\/em> America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A history and archaeology major on the Hill, Sasaki originally envisioned a career traveling the world on archaeological digs\u2014until she did field work in Greece the summer before <\/strong>her senior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re doing this with <\/em>America, not just for <\/em>America.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I really connected with was the objects that were coming out of the excavation, not the excavation itself,\u201d Sasaki recalls. \u201cWhen I talked to my advisor, she said, \u2018You know what? It sounds like you\u2019re a museum person.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her senior year, Sasaki landed an internship at Cornell\u2019s Johnson Museum\u2014an experience that set her on a path to leading institutions across the U.S. Her first job was at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, where she started as a volunteer and rose to assistant collections manager while earning a master\u2019s degree in anthropology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, Sasaki went on to serve in various administrative, educational, and program development roles at museums in the western U.S.\u2014most recently, as the Oakland Museum of California\u2019s director of audience and civic engagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Smithsonian came calling in 2016, Sasaki headed to D.C. to oversee the Asian Pacific American Center (which mounts exhibitions online and around the country), a post she held until 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Sasaki\u2019s first tasks for the nascent women\u2019s museum was overseeing selection of its advisory council, which includes such notables as Lynda Carter of \u201cWonder Woman\u201d fame, fashion mogul Tory Burch, tennis legend Billie Jean King, and actress-activist Rosario Dawson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMuseums are ultimately storytellers,\u201d observes Sasaki, a Colorado native. \u201cAnd in the past, only certain stories were told.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn this moment, women have the ability\u2014and deserve the opportunity\u2014to represent ourselves in a way that can be incredibly powerful and inclusive,\u201d Sasaki says, \u201cinstead of having history written about us, or for us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Editor\u2019s Note: In July 2023, Sasaki announced that she had been named the Smithsonian\u2019s deputy undersecretary for special projects. In her new role, she\u2019ll help prepare for the commemoration of the U.S.\u2019s 250th birthday in 2026, among other duties.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
