{"id":21596,"date":"2023-05-22T15:17:01","date_gmt":"2023-05-22T19:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=21596"},"modified":"2023-09-20T11:04:04","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T15:04:04","slug":"fruits-veggies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/fruits-veggies\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Red Berries (and Grapes and Apples and Tomatoes and Cukes \u2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Take a tasty tour through the produce aisle with a cornucopia of Cornell-created fruits and veggies <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Lindsay Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><em>With hundreds of acres of test plots, orchards, and vineyards, Cornell has nurtured the development of more than 250 varieties of fruits and veggies since 1880, with more added to the list each year. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Researchers in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and <a href=\"https:\/\/cals.cornell.edu\/cornell-agritech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell AgriTech<\/a> (formerly the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station) have created some of the most recognizable and unique varieties of produce on the market. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>With many breeds widely adopted by growers, it\u2019s possible some of your favorite foods\u2014whether you enjoyed them in your wineglass last night or picked them off a tree last fall\u2014were made by Big Red scientists.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Here\u2019s a sampling of those Cornell-created comestibles:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Apples<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More than five dozen varieties of New York\u2019s signature fruit were created at Cornell\u2014and even the most casual apple lovers likely recognize their names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Empire<\/strong>, among the most popular, is a sweet-and-tart cross between McIntosh and Red Delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s also juicy <strong>Jonagold<\/strong>, honey-like with a tinge of tartness; <strong>Geneva<\/strong>, part of the Mirabelle plum family, which is widely used in France and Germany for brandies, compotes, and preserves; <strong>Jam Session<\/strong>, a well-balanced blue plum with yellow-green flesh;
