Former law professor (and proud polymath) Ozan Varol \u201903 inspires audiences with lessons rooted in space exploration<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve heard the expression \u201cit\u2019s not rocket science\u201d\u2014meaning that the topic at hand is comparatively simple. But in his breakthrough 2020 book, Ozan Varol \u201903<\/a>\u2014who contributed to two Mars Rover missions as an undergrad\u2014rejects the idea that designing a voyage to the cosmos is inherently unfathomable to all but the most rarified experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, in Think Like a Rocket Scientist:<\/em> Simple Strategies You Can Use to Make Giant Leaps in Work and Life<\/em><\/a>, he turns its basic principles into a straightforward blueprint to achieving your own dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSmart and witty,\u201d said a review in Publishers Weekly<\/em>, \u201cVarol\u2019s masterful analysis explains complicated scientific principles and connects them to ordinary life for a mainstream audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Varol\u2019s own nonlinear path embodies the advice he offers. He immigrated from Turkey at 17 to study astrophysics on the Hill; he worked under Steven Squyres \u201978, PhD \u201981<\/a> (now a professor emeritus of astronomy), scientific principal investigator on the Mars Rover project. <\/p>\n<\/div>

After earning a JD at the University of Iowa and working as a law clerk and attorney, Varol joined the faculty at Lewis & Clark Law School\u2014but in 2021, a year after Rocket Scientist<\/em> made a splash, he realized that academia wasn\u2019t the right path for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe tend to see what we\u2019ve done previously in life, and left behind, as a waste,\u201d Varol observes from his home in Portland, Oregon, which he shares with his wife and two dogs, Einstein and Sputnik. <\/em>\u201cBut I think it\u2019s a compost pile that you can use as fertilizer for what\u2019s awakening. That\u2019s certainly been true for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rocket Scientist<\/em> garnered Varol a slew of invitations as a corporate speaker, and he has since become an in-demand guest at conferences and private events for such firms as Microsoft, Intel, and Adidas, and even the U.S. Navy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the delight of fellow Cornellians, he was the keynote speaker at the annual\u00a0Cornell Alumni Leadership Conference<\/a>\u00a0in San Diego in February 2023. This summer, he\u2019ll deliver the Olin Lecture at\u00a0Reunion<\/a>\u2014mainly focusing on content from his latest book,\u00a0Awaken Your Genius<\/em><\/a>, published in April 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his Rocket Scientist\u00ad<\/em>-inspired talks,<\/em> Varol presents a series of concrete steps toward accomplishing life goals both modest and grand\u2014from learning an instrument to leaping into an entirely new career\u2014and applies the practical scientific thinking that he says can help you get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process he explores is rooted in \u201cmoonshot thinking,\u201d best embodied by President John F. Kennedy\u2019s audacious 1962 declaration that the U.S. would walk on the moon by 1969; Varol employs it to describe a leap in work or life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMoonshot thinking is a combination of idealism and pragmatism,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s aiming high, but combining it with a concrete roadmap for getting there.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a practice Varol says has guided him since childhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up in a small apartment in Istanbul with unreliable electricity, he recalls, the frequent outages frightened him; to entertain him in the darkness, his father used a soccer ball and a lit candle to illustrate the Earth traveling around the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThose were my first astronomy lessons,\u201d Varol says. \u201cI was hooked. And my own moonshot became being an astronaut one day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his middle school library, he researched the backgrounds of every NASA astronaut, using their career paths to fashion one for himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He learned English, taught himself computer programming, and was admitted to Cornell\u2014a dream institution for Varol, who idolized Carl Sagan and devoured the famed astronomer\u2019s \u201cCosmos\u201d TV series as a kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Awaken Your Genius<\/em>\u2014which debuted at number three on the Wall Street Journal<\/em> bestseller list\u2014Varol challenges readers to follow his example and (in the words of the subtitle) \u201cescape conformity, ignite creativity, and become extraordinary.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

How? By unshackling themselves from their preconceived identities, discovering their true desires, and embracing their idiosyncrasies as their biggest strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis book is for aspiring universe denters,\u201d Varol writes in the introduction. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a practical book for impractical people. It will give you the tools you need to wake up and find yourself\u2014and to discover the melodies that only you can play in the symphony of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Varol will deliver the Olin Lecture at Reunion \u201923 from 3\u20134 p.m. on Friday, June 9, in Bailey Hall (it will also be livestreamed<\/a> and available for viewing after the event).
