alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cornellsunset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cornellsunset<\/a> Instagram account, which features a colorful feed of gorgeous East Hill eye candy, was created by a student who\u2019d spent his first semester longing for the real-life view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the pandemic, Juli\u00e1n Jaramillo \u201924 studied remotely from his home in Plano, Texas, in fall 2020\u2014and remembers seeing many social media posts by Cornellians watching Ithaca sunsets with their friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I did come to campus in spring of 2021,\u201d the urban and regional studies major recalls, \u201cI very much had the mindset of \u2018I\u2019m not going to miss a single sunset; I\u2019m going to appreciate each and every one of them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><figure \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He made up for lost time, viewing nearly every sunset that semester (weather permitting), mostly from the classic perch atop the Slope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he took a <em>lot<\/em> of pictures\u2014initially planning to save them all for a massive Insta post at the end of the academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he landed on a different approach: creating an account dedicated to Big Red sunsets, viewed from various spots on campus and across the seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaramillo made the first @cornellsunset post in February 2021; by summer 2021, he was accepting submissions from other photographers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<section aria-label=\"Image Carousel\" href=\"https:\/\/cornellsun.com\/2021\/03\/24\/cornellians-battle-pandemic-boredom-with-instagram-levity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Daily Sun<\/em> article<\/a> about Cornell-themed social media accounts that had sprouted during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of May 2023, the Insta is closing in on 300 posts (some with multiple images) and has more than 6,700 followers\u2014many on campus, but also alumni and friends around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide has-text-align-center is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p> The about half of the account\u2019s fare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest comprises nearly every other Big Red sunset view you can imagine\u2014from North Campus and Beebe Lake to tucked-away slots between buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Jaramillo is abroad this semester (in the <a href=\"https:\/\/aap.cornell.edu\/academics\/rome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell in Rome<\/a> program), he has delegated admin duties to ILR student Sam Hass \u201925.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cThe application process was pretty much, \u2018Send me your top 10 sunset pictures,\u2019\u201d says Hass, a hiking enthusiast who started following the account as soon as she got to campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what does its creator think are the ingredients for an ideal sunset?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI like when you see multiple colors, especially different shades of pink,\u201d Jaramillo says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd for that, you don\u2019t want it to be cloudy, but you do want some clouds that are relatively low hanging\u2014or else there\u2019s no contrast to the sky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But even more important than the logistics, he says, is the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s just you, you can enjoy it,\u201d he observes. \u201cBut when you\u2019re with friends, or you\u2019re on the Slope and you see everyone else there\u2014that makes for a <em>really<\/em> good
