Others are requirements that have evolved into rites of passage for students in certain majors or schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still others feature a professor (sometimes, one famous far beyond the Hill) whose unique approach expands undergrads\u2019 minds and ignites a love of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Read on for a taste\u2014in no particular order\u2014of some of the most legendary, popular, and unique classes taught from the mid-20th century to the present. wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Intro to Wines\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Offered in its current form since 1972\u2014and required for Hotelies, though wildly popular with students from all \u201967, PhD \u201976; and now senior lecturer <a href=\"https:\/\/sha.cornell.edu\/faculty-research\/faculty\/css14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cheryl Stanley \u201900<\/a>, Mutkoski\u2019s former TA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tens of thousands of Cornellians have taken the course\u2014with enrollees easily identified by the little black cases in which they tote their glasses to class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018History of American Foreign Relations\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, this two-semester course packed auditoriums with students\u2014who sometimes brought friends and family\u2014eager to hear professor <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/lafeber-festschrift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Walter LaFeber<\/a> bring the topic to life, lecturing without notes and only a brief outline on the blackboard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course jump-started the careers of numerous figures in U.S. foreign policy (including the late Sandy Berger \u201967, who served as National Security Advisor under President Bill Clinton)\u2014but also broadly imparted a passion for, and understanding of, the role of government and the importance of diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Masters of European Fiction\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unofficially dubbed \u201cDirty Lit\u201d\u2014reportedly because a previous prof had focused on authors\u2019 intimate lives\u2014it was among the courses Vladimir Nabokov taught while at Cornell from 1948\u201359. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It quickly became one of the most popular on campus, as Nabokov (whose <em>Lolita<\/em> was published during his time on the Hill) lectured on Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Marcel Proust, Franz Kafka, Robert Louis Stevenson, Gustave Flaubert, and James Joyce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the course\u2019s contents went on to be published in his posthumous 2002 volume, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/8148.Lectures_on_Literature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Lectures on Literature<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018The Development of American Ideals\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the decades, more than 8,000 students took the two-semester ILR School course, taught by Milton Konvitz, PhD \u201933. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They learned about the philosophical, political, and religious foundations of American ideals and institutions, as well as how those foundations shaped our constitutional and labor laws, and civil and human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fungi have shaped our civilization and the natural world in which we live, playing crucial roles in everything from agriculture and climate to disease and the environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The class explores fungi as food; decayers of organic matter; pathogens and symbionts of plants and animals; and sources of mind-altering chemicals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originated by George Hudler (now a professor emeritus) in the early \u201990s, it has become one of the largest courses in the School of Integrative Plant Science, with more than 300 students. It\u2019s now taught by associate professor <a href=\"https:\/\/cals.cornell.edu\/kathie-therese-hodge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kathie Hodge, PhD \u201998<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Science and Technology of Foods\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Who wouldn\u2019t want to make ice cream in class? Offered each fall and taught by lecturer <a href=\"https:\/\/cals.cornell.edu\/chris-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Loss \u201996, PhD \u201905<\/a>, the course explores the roles of engineering, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, nutrition, toxicology, and microbiology in foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Late in the semester, student teams design ice cream flavors, competing for the chance to have them sold at the Dairy Bar the following spring (or even beyond). Past winners include the coffee-flavored \u201cEzra\u2019s Morning Cup,\u201d now a Dairy mainstay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Our Solar System\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The intro course was called Astronomy 102 when Carl Sagan taught it in the 1970s. href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/better-decisions-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the course<\/a> in 2018 as a pilot project, offering life lessons from economists and psychologists who draw on research in their fields to offer a deeper understanding of human behavior and how it affects decision-making. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spread mostly by word of mouth, She <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2020\/12\/pulitzer-winning-writer-and-professor-alison-lurie-dies-94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed away<\/a> in 2020 at age 94.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Intro to Psychology\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Held in Bailey, it has long been one of the University\u2019s largest courses.
