We offer a (not-at-all-comprehensive) roundup of quintessentially Cornellian classes\u2014and invite you to weigh in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While each Cornellians\u2019 experience is unique\u2014especially given the University\u2019s multitude of schools, colleges, and majors\u2014certain courses have stood out as legendary over the decades, some enriching the lives and minds of generations of alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we set out to compile a roundup of those particularly memorable offerings\u2014admittedly, one that\u2019s in no way comprehensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the entries\u2014particularly large intro classes that draw students from across disciplines\u2014have become Big Red legends through their sheer size and longevity. Others are requirements that have evolved into rites of passage for students in certain majors or schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still others feature a professor (sometimes, one famous far beyond the Hill) whose unique approach expands undergrads\u2019 minds and ignites a love of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read on for a taste\u2014in no particular order\u2014of some of the most legendary, popular, and unique classes taught from the mid-20th century to the present. And please add your own memories in the comments!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Intro to Wines\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Offered in its current form since 1972\u2014and required for Hotelies, though wildly popular with students from all disciplines\u2014the course has long been a rite of passage on the Hill, with many taking it their senior spring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Over the past half-century, just three people have taught it, all of them alums themselves: Vance Christian \u201961, MS \u201965; Stephen Mutkoski \u201967, PhD \u201976; and now senior lecturer Cheryl Stanley \u201900<\/a>, Mutkoski\u2019s former TA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tens of thousands of Cornellians have taken the course\u2014with enrollees easily identified by the little black cases in which they tote their glasses to class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018History of American Foreign Relations\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For years, this two-semester course packed auditoriums with students\u2014who sometimes brought friends and family\u2014eager to hear professor Walter LaFeber<\/a> bring the topic to life, lecturing without notes and only a brief outline on the blackboard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course jump-started the careers of numerous figures in U.S. foreign policy (including the late Sandy Berger \u201967, who served as National Security Advisor under President Bill Clinton)\u2014but also broadly imparted a passion for, and understanding of, the role of government and the importance of diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Masters of European Fiction\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unofficially dubbed \u201cDirty Lit\u201d\u2014reportedly because a previous prof had focused on authors\u2019 intimate lives\u2014it was among the courses Vladimir Nabokov taught while at Cornell from 1948\u201359. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It quickly became one of the most popular on campus, as Nabokov (whose Lolita<\/em> was published during his time on the Hill) lectured on Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Marcel Proust, Franz Kafka, Robert Louis Stevenson, Gustave Flaubert, and James Joyce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the course\u2019s contents went on to be published in his posthumous 2002 volume, Lectures on Literature<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018The Development of American Ideals\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over the decades, more than 8,000 students took the two-semester ILR School course, taught by Milton Konvitz, PhD \u201933. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They learned about the philosophical, political, and religious foundations of American ideals and institutions, as well as how those foundations shaped our constitutional and labor laws, and civil and human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fungi have shaped our civilization and the natural world in which we live, playing crucial roles in everything from agriculture and climate to disease and the environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The class explores fungi as food; decayers of organic matter; pathogens and symbionts of plants and animals; and sources of mind-altering chemicals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originated by George Hudler (now a professor emeritus) in the early \u201990s, it has become one of the largest courses in the School of Integrative Plant Science, with more than 300 students. It\u2019s now taught by associate professor Kathie Hodge, PhD \u201998<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Science and Technology of Foods\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Who wouldn\u2019t want to make ice cream in class? Offered each fall and taught by lecturer Chris Loss \u201996, PhD \u201905<\/a>, the course explores the roles of engineering, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, nutrition, toxicology, and microbiology in foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Late in the semester, student teams design ice cream flavors, competing for the chance to have them sold at the Dairy Bar the following spring (or even beyond). Past winners include the coffee-flavored \u201cEzra\u2019s Morning Cup,\u201d now a Dairy mainstay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Our Solar System\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The intro course was called Astronomy 102 when Carl Sagan taught it in the 1970s. His remarkable ability to explain the nature of geologic time to first-year students\u2014not to mention his ability to share his awe of the galaxy\u2019s wonders\u2014helped establish the future \u201cCosmos\u201d host and Pulitzer Prize-winning author as a legend on the Hill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

None other than \u201cScience Guy\u201d Bill Nye \u201977 (who today leads the Planetary Society, as Sagan once did) has cited the course<\/a> as giving him a deep appreciation for the cosmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018American Folk Literature\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Professor Harold Thompson\u2019s class\u2014colloquially known as \u201cRomp-n-Stomp\u201d to the many who took in during the mid-20th century\u2014introduced students to literature and culture through folklore, audio recordings, and lively in-class performances (hence the nickname). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Course alumni include folk musician Peter Yarrow \u201959 of Peter, Paul and Mary fame, who was a TA during its final semester in 1959.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018The First American University\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A member of a multigenerational Big Red family<\/a>, Corey Earle \u201907\u2014a staffer in Alumni Affairs and Development\u2014has long been Cornell\u2019s unofficial historian. He launched his popular course, fondly known as \u201cStorytime with Corey,\u201d in 2011. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The class packs Uris Auditorium on Monday evenings. And when the pandemic moved it online in 2020, its popularity soared: many students attended with their parents, and generations of alumni tuned in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Intro to Oceanography\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For more than a decade, students have filled Bailey Hall for professor Bruce Monger<\/a>\u2019s spirited lectures exploring the vastness of the oceans. The course is offered through the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, which is shared by CALS and the College of Engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monger delves into how waves, tides, and marine ecosystems work\u2014all while mixing in climate activism and calls to action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Human Bonding\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Human development professor Cindy Hazan<\/a> designed this popular course, which she has taught for more than a quarter-century\u2014leading 600 undergrads each spring through the scholarly exploration of love, sex, marriage, dating, and other matters of adult romantic attachment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As a student once wrote in a course evaluation: \u201cIt\u2019s great to be getting credit for thinking about the things I\u2019m thinking about all the time anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Better Decisions for Life, Love, and Money\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A team of six professors launched the course<\/a> in 2018 as a pilot project, offering life lessons from economists and psychologists who draw on research in their fields to offer a deeper understanding of human behavior and how it affects decision-making. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spread mostly by word of mouth, enrollment increased, even through the pandemic\u2014and when in-person classes resumed, the course moved into the 700-seat Statler Auditorium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Restaurant Management\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This required capstone course is a longtime rite of passage for students in the Nolan School of Hotel Administration, incorporating such topics as market analysis and operational management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It culminates with each team overseeing an evening in which paying customers\u2014often comprising friends, family, and faculty\u2014dine on a menu they\u2019ve designed, with classmates staffing the kitchen and dining room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Children\u2019s Literature\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was one of several popular courses taught by English professor Alison Lurie, an acclaimed author of novels, short stories, and essays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lurie\u2014who won a Pulitzer Prize for her 1984 novel Foreign Affairs<\/em>\u2014also led a fiction seminar for MFA students, undergraduate writing courses, and classes on folklore during her long career on the Hill. She passed away<\/a> in 2020 at age 94.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018Intro to Psychology\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Held in Bailey, it has long been one of the University\u2019s largest courses. It was taught by James Maas, PhD \u201966, for nearly half a century, until his retirement<\/a> in 2011, and by David Pizarro for a decade afterward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course covers the essentials of intro psych while delving into intriguing topics such as perception, memory, morality, and creativity\u2014giving students tools to understand the human mind while fostering an ongoing sense of wonder about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
