Jankowski\u2014the almost-veterinarian who\u2019s the protagonist of the 2011 film <em>Water for Elephants<\/em>\u2014won a March Madness-style <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/fictional-cornellians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter poll<\/a> conducted by Big Red history expert <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CREarle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Earle \u201907<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the final matchup in early April, Jankowski beat Tom Wambsgans\u2014one of the leads on the HBO series \u201cSuccession\u201d\u2014to top the bracket of 64 characters, which Earle had organized into four divisions (drama and comedy\/romance, each in film or TV), complete with seeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"605\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Corey-tweet-A.jpg\" alt=\"A tweet from Corey Earle describing the results of his Twitter poll\" class=\"wp-image-19315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Corey-tweet-A.jpg 602w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Corey-tweet-A-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Corey-tweet-A-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Corey-tweet-A-316x318.jpg 316w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Corey-tweet-A-400x402.jpg 400w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Corey-tweet-A-200x201.jpg 200w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Corey-tweet-A-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Earle announced the winner with a good-natured swat at the movie\u2019s ersatz campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a razor-thin victory, though: of the nearly 500 votes cast, Jankowski tallied 50.8%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Jankowski and Wambsgans had each been the number-two seed in his bracket, their Big Red bona fides pale in comparison to that of the character assumed to be a shoe-in: Andy Bernard of \u201cThe Office,\u201d the number-one seed in TV comedy\/romance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only did Bernard routinely tout his Big Red pedigree on the hit sitcom\u2014including his glory days with the fictitious singing group Here Comes Treble\u2014but Ed Helms, the comedian who portrayed him, even <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2014\/05\/take-it-tvs-andy-bernard-be-fool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spoke at Convocation<\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think I probably would have gone with Andy,\u201d Earle admits. \u201cI know he\u2019s not everyone\u2019s favorite portrayal of a Cornellian, but Cornell was so central to his character. He\u2019s contemplating film and TV portrayals of real-life Cornellians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has already compiled dozens of names, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg \u201954 (Felicity Jones) in <em>On the Basis of Sex<\/em>; corporate whistleblower Mark Whitacre, PhD \u201983 (Matt Damon), in <em>The Informant!<\/em>; fabulist Clifford Irving \u201951 (Richard Gere) in <em>The Hoax<\/em>; attorney Jan Schlichtmann, JD \u201977 (John Travolta), in <em>A Civil Action<\/em>; and even Brad Pitt impersonating Anthony Fauci, MD \u201966, on \u201cSaturday Night Live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That contest, however, will probably unfold on a different platform, since Twitter voting may soon be limited to paying subscribers.
