Some were students seeing the band for the first time. Others were nomadic Deadheads merely seeing them the first time that <em>week<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many were \u201ctapers\u201d\u2014fans who recorded shows on cassettes (with the band\u2019s tacit approval), then copied and circulated them. (<em>Rare and Manuscript Collections<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of how they ended up in Barton, one thing can be assumed: none of them knew this Sunday evening would one day be known in the Dead lexicon as \u201c5\/8\/77\u201d\u2014arguably the band\u2019s most legendary performance of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t say I was aware that I was listening to something classic from this band at that moment,\u201d observes Lauran Jacoby \u201980, then a freshman in Arts &amp; Sciences. \u201cBut the fact that the show was happening right here in Ithaca, in our backyard, as students; that made it special. It was our home turf, which made it intimate, and made it easy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the show\u2019s most notable moments came about halfway through, at which point the spacious, armory-style building was steaming hot. The crowd was densely packed, but peaceful. Even in the cooler pockets of the hall, T-shirts clung to sweaty backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It was our home turf, which made it intimate, and made it easy.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Lauran Jacoby \u201980<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After the band returned to the stage from a short break\u2014and just before they launched into what\u2019s now regarded as one of the best versions of their signature \u201cScarlet Begonias\u201d and \u201cFire on the Mountain\u201d mashup (aka \u201cScarlet\/Fire\u201d)\u2014guitarist Bob Weir had some instructions for the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlright, now we\u2019re gonna play everybody\u2019s favorite fun game: Move Back,\u201d Weir said. \u201cNow, when I tell you \u2018Take a step back,\u2019 everybody take a step back. Right? Right. Okay, take a step back. And take another step back. Then a sophomore in ILR, he tagged along with friends to Barton that night; it was his first time hearing the Dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJerry wore dark sunglasses, and I was standing at his feet, so I could see right underneath them,\u201d recalls Zimmerman. \u201cHe leaned back for one jam and went into some electronic bliss, wailing away one of his incredible guitar solos. I just remember my jaw dropped, in sheer awe of what I was experiencing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 5\/8\/77 show was Zimmerman\u2019s push down the Grateful Dead rabbit hole; he\u2019d go on to see them about 70 more times before Garcia\u2019s death in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt changed my life forever,\u201d says Zimmerman,<strong> <\/strong>who now heads a media and lifestyle company in Sedona, AZ. \u201cThe crowd that went to the Dead shows really inspired me to consider how I could be living my life. It was this vibe of a tribe. She attended with her then-boyfriend (now husband) and his friends, who drove from the University at Buffalo for the occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe crowd was going nuts, and I was trying to hear the music for almost the first time,\u201d says Jacoby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe atmosphere was great, but there was a tiny bit of disconnect for me. They obviously knew more about what they were hearing than I did at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But for the ensuing 12 years, Jacoby and her husband saw \u201cmany, many\u201d Dead shows across the Northeast. Over the years, they\u2019ve even scheduled trips around Dead concerts, most notably in California and Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Horowitz \u201978 wasn\u2019t a Dead fan before the show either\u2014despite being, as chair of the Cornell Concert Commission (CCC), one of the key players who brought the band to campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cThe vast majority of us had never seen the Dead, unless you had an older sibling,\u201d says Horowitz, a periodontist in Scarsdale, NY. \u201cSurely none of our parents were into it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The crowd that went to the Dead shows really inspired me to consider how I could be living my life.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Stu Zimmerman \u201979,<\/strong> <strong>BS \u201980<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The CCC, Horowitz notes, had a less-than-stellar financial record at the time\u2014a situation he and fellow members sought to turn around with 5\/8\/77.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe needed to show we could bring in a real act, bring in money,\u201d he says, \u201cand that the Concert Commission couldn\u2019t just exist for our own fun\u2019s sake, but for the benefit of Cornell.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Horowitz connected with a New Jersey-based concert promoter who regularly booked huge acts like the Who and the Rolling Stones. \u201cHe offered us the Dead,\u201d he recalls, \u201cand we said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After convincing administrators to let them sell beer at Barton, the CCC began promoting the show, with advance tickets priced at $6.50. (<em>Provided<\/em>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe literally taught ourselves how to become concert promoters for that show,\u201d recalls Horowitz, who\u2014you guessed it\u2014also became a hardcore Deadhead after 5\/8\/77. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(And the Dead concert would, indeed, go a long way toward solidifying the CCC\u2019s role on campus.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Horowitz was too focused on running the show to partake in the merry atmosphere\u2014though he fondly remembers giving Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux a Mother\u2019s Day rose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As he nervously prepared to take the stage before showtime to instruct the audience not to rush the stage or smoke, Horowitz got a quick-but-unforgettable pep talk from drummer Mickey Hart (who, as it happens, would go on to marry a Cornellian, Caryl Ohrbach Hart \u201979).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Bobby, you\u2019ll be fine,\u2019\u201d says Horowitz. \u201c\u2018Just be yourself. Breathe. Among his duties was manually controlling a six-foot-long Super Trouper spotlight, a \u201cmonster\u201d of an instrument he recalls struggling to keep steady during a Beach Boys concert in 1975.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Normally, says Gross, the spotlight was situated in Barton\u2019s bleachers\u2014so he was shocked when he arrived at the Dead show to find it perched on a narrow platform about 50 feet from the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom the scaffold high above the floor, it was as if a magical transition had occurred,\u201d Gross wrote in an essay for Conners\u2019s book.  \u201cA whoosh of multicolored people simply flowed all around the Barton floor and in seconds the scaffold was surrounded by flowered shirts and what appeared to be hundreds of small \u2018trees\u2019 [the concert tapers] holding mics.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>By the time Conners was writing <em>Cornell \u201977<\/em>\u2014whose publication coincided with the show\u2019s 40th anniversary, the same year a 5\/8\/77 concert album was first released commercially\u2014the mystique was well established; five years earlier, the original soundboard recordings had been archived in the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy did this show become so legendary, specifically?\u201d Conners muses. \u201cIt <em>is <\/em>exceptional. In fact, the 5\/8\/77 mix that served as the master copy for the commercial release came not from an audience taper but from Betty Cantor-Jackson, a longtime Dead soundboard operator whose rich, crisp recordings earned their own label among fans: the \u201cBetty Boards.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But on 5\/8\/77, the hype was yet to come. There were just moments, memories, and music\u2014in particular, as Zimmerman calls it, the \u201crather transcendent\u201d version of \u201cMorning Dew\u201d that closed the second set. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Had I known this show would acquire this legendary status, I probably would\u2019ve armed myself with more rolls of film.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Larry Reichman \u201980, JD \u201984<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo this day, I have never heard anything like it,\u201d Matt Adler marvels. \u201cThat wasn\u2019t the Betty Board or the \u201977 tour. It was Jerry\u2019s magic in that one moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also the band\u2019s famous cover of Merle Haggard\u2019s \u201cMama Tried,\u201d at the end of which Weir\u2014or bassist Phil Lesh; opinions vary\u2014said, \u201cThanks mom.\u201d It was an especially poignant moment for Adler, who\u2019d lost his mother to cancer just months before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there was the unusual encore: \u201cOne More Saturday Night,\u201d a song the band wouldn\u2019t typically play on a different day of the week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, there was the weather, which provided an unforgettable coda. As the audience emerged from the sweltering hall into the night\u2014and as the Dead bid Ithaca farewell, truckin\u2019 on to Buffalo for their next show\u2014they were treated to one final surprise: the swirling white flakes of a May snowstorm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe next day, Monday, was the beginning of Study Week,\u201d recalls Loretta Adler, \u201cand I always thought the snow was a reminder: \u2018Okay, kids, you\u2019ve had your fun.
