{"id":18835,"date":"2023-03-27T14:17:48","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T18:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=18835"},"modified":"2023-03-28T14:33:37","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T18:33:37","slug":"newman-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/newman-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"For Newman Lab\u2019s 75th Birthday, Some Fascinating Facts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">You don\u2019t have to be a nuclear scientist to appreciate these tidbits about the Hill\u2019s first facility devoted to accelerator physics\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Elementary particle physics research on the Hill began in the 1930s\u2014but the field got a huge boost with the World War II-era invention of the synchrotron, a device that propels particles to extremely high energies through a narrow vacuum tube surrounded by magnets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newman Lab, home to Cornell\u2019s first synchrotron, opened in 1948. Located on the northern edge of central campus behind Clark and Savage\/Kinzelberg halls, it also housed machine and electronics shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facility quickly led to groundbreaking advances\u2014and the rapid <em>acceleration<\/em> (pun intended) of the University\u2019s particle physics research program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: Newman Laboratory Celebrates 75 years of particle physics research\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x_H-wvarzK8?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; many improvements and upgrades to Cornell\u2019s particle accelerator facilities\u2014including the Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CHESS<\/a>)\u2014are designed, built, and tested there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As the University and the College of Arts &amp; Zirkel \/ via Wikimedia Commons)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <em>The Cornell Physics Department: Recollections and a History of Sorts,<\/em> experimental physicist Robert Wilson (later namesake of the University\u2019s Wilson Synchrotron Lab) had argued that humidity would play havoc with the sensitive electronic apparatus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>It has the highest ceiling of any lab on campus!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Measuring just over 28.5 feet, it also features a ceiling-mounted working crane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>Its <\/strong>early researchers included<strong> <\/strong>future Nobel laureates<strong>!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Physicist Hans Bethe\u2014whose career on the Hill spanned seven decades\u2014was a leader of the Manhattan Project that designed and built the atomic bomb during World War II. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethe turned the first spade at Newman Lab\u2019s groundbreaking and recruited a cohort of outstanding researchers\u2014including Richard Feynman, Robert Wilson, Philip Morrison, and Lloyd Smith, PhD \u201930\u2014to do cutting-edge work in high-energy elementary particle physics. Additionally, particle accelerators are used in hospitals for some cancer therapies and, increasingly, in new methods of wastewater treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>One of its early researchers became president of Cornell!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Also recruited by Bethe was a young physicist named <a href=\"https:\/\/president.cornell.edu\/the-presidency\/dale-r-corson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dale Corson<\/a>, who went on to become dean of Engineering, University provost\u2014and, in 1969, Cornell\u2019s eighth president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He served for eight years, a tumultuous period that saw intense student activism, the rise of shared href=\"https:\/\/physics.cornell.edu\/jared-maxson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jared Maxson, PhD \u201915<\/a>, and his team have built a tabletop electron diffraction machine in Newman Lab, which he describes as similar to an electron microscope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combined with a detector designed by other<strong> <\/strong>Cornell physicists, it enables them to record video of atoms in motion at the picosecond (one trillionth of a second) resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 foot. In the Newman Lab clean room, you\u2019ll find only <em>one<\/em> per cubic foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>Its innovations could spur industry-wide energy savings!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Particle accelerators require vast amounts of energy to operate. The concept of reclaiming the energy of an electron beam\u2014instead of \u201cdumping\u201d it after the experiment\u2014to accelerate the next beam of particles was first discussed in a 1965 paper by <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.cornell.edu\/maury-tigner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maury Tigner, PhD \u201962<\/a>, now the Hans A. He passed away in 1990 at age 99.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\">I<strong>t does <em>really<\/em> chilly work!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the lab\u2019s experiments involve deep-chilled materials through which electric current can flow without resistance. These tests are run in special cryogenic pits, which act as super-charged chest freezers.
