Though Cornell first had a hockey team in the early 20th century, the rink\u2019s opening in the 1950s spawned a family of fiercely dedicated supporters, complete with their own set of traditions. But after joining the radiology faculty at CVM, he started attending games in the \u201990s, eventually becoming an avid volunteer photographer for the CHA. He became part of the Faithful subset affectionately dubbed the \u201cTownies\u201d\u2014local fans, some of whom have been sitting in the same seats for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are so many little \u2018rink rats,\u2019\u201d Dykes says, using the fond term for children of the Faithful. \u201cThey grew up running around the rink, they married and stayed in Ithaca\u2014and now their kids are running around there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the stands, the demographics are clear among the sea of red. (<em>CHA<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Cornell hockey traditions have been widely imitated but never equaled,\u201d Jim Roberts \u201971 and Arthur Mintz \u201971 write in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/book\/9781501702600\/forever-faithful\/#bookTabs=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forever Faithful: Celebrating the Greatest Moments of Cornell Hockey<\/a>.<\/em>  \u201cThere may be other universities with more impressive facilities, but there\u2019s nothing like Lynah Rink. Programs like Boston College and the University of Michigan have more national championships, but the reputation of Big Red hockey stands out. Being a member of the Lynah Faithful is something that stays with you all your life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 4,267-seat rink that\u2019s home to Big Red hockey and its fans was constructed in 1957\u201358; it was named in honor of James Lynah 1905, Cornell\u2019s athletic director from 1935\u201343. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Being a member of the Lynah Faithful is something that stays with you all your life.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Jim Roberts \u201971<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Arthur Mintz \u201971<\/strong>, <em>Forever Faithful<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, home games had been held on Beebe Lake\u2014until a series of mild winters in the late 1940s forced the University to scrap the program. Varsity hockey wouldn\u2019t resume on the Hill until the opening of Lynah a decade later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as the Big Red men\u2019s team became more and more successful\u2014winning national titles and sending players to the pros\u2014Faithful traditions grew and solidified. They even grew beyond Lynah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaybe most of all, I remember the fans,\u201d legendary NHL goalie Ken Dryden \u201969 writes in his foreword to <em>Forever Faithful<\/em>. \u201cThe ones who camped out overnight in raw Ithaca weather to get their season tickets. The ones who went on the road with us, to Christmas tournaments in Boston or New York, and the two or three thousand who sounded like 10,000 at the ECACs in Boston Garden. The visiting team\u2019s goal tender, for example, is routinely derided as a particularly porous piece of kitchen equipment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, as Adriano Manocchia \u201997, BS \u201998, puts it on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elynah.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">elynah.com<\/a>: \u201cthe Faithful must remind the opposing goalie that while we have a goalie, he is merely a sieve.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a student, Manocchia had a key role in Faithful fandom: revving up the crowd by playing the cowbell. (<em>Cornell University<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But it has also been posited that some visiting players find the atmosphere a welcome challenge\u2014that it revs them up and encourages them to play their best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(That may have a limited effect, though: Big Red men\u2019s hockey has won more than 70 percent of its home contests, including a stunning 63-game streak in 1967\u201372.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even on the minority of occasions when Cornell doesn\u2019t emerge victorious at home, the evening ends with a touching coda.
