{"id":17877,"date":"2023-02-23T16:59:57","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T21:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=17877"},"modified":"2023-05-23T15:37:06","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T19:37:06","slug":"miss-vermont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/miss-vermont\/","title":{"rendered":"For Miss Vermont, Pageants Are a Platform for Social Change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Alexina Federhen \u201919, who represented the tiny state at the Miss America competition, is working to destigmatize mental healthcare<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Lindsay Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alexinafederhen\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lexina Federhen \u201919<\/a> is well aware of what most people assume when they hear that she\u2014Miss Vermont\u2014is stopping by an event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She knows what\u2019s expected of her as the state\u2019s top beauty queen, and she delivers. She\u2019s poised and stylish, always up for a photo with a child (or a cow). (<em>Provided<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And some fellow Cornellians competed in Miss America within recent memory: Joanna Guy \u201913 (then Miss Maryland) finished in the top 10 in 2013, and Camille Sims \u201915 (then Miss New York) was second runner up in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federhen was 15 when she nabbed her first national title of USA Ambassador Teen, going on to win Miss Vermont\u2019s Outstanding Teen as a high school senior. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She continued competing while attending Cornell, where she was an Alpha Phi sorority sister and a Gates Millennium National Scholar, and won the \u201cMiss Metropolitan\u201d regional crown on the Miss New York circuit her sophomore year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In recent years, we\u2019ve seen <em>really <\/em>smart women competing. It\u2019s not to say they haven\u2019t been there before, but I think you\u2019re seeing those two worlds collide.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After being laid off from a Boston architectural firm during the pandemic, she returned home to launch her own graphic design studio specializing in brand strategy and resume pageants in earnest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2022, she took the stage at the Miss Vermont competition. During the \u201csocial impact\u201d segment, she discussed a youth mental health initiative she founded, and was candid about her own struggles with anxiety and depression. (For her talent, she sang Adele\u2019s \u201cTurning Tables.\u201d)  She won\u2014becoming the first Latina to do so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven months later, she headed to Miss America. Federhen was hopeful, but knew history was against her. (<em>Provided<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Despite her polished pitch on mental health awareness and tuneful mash-up of Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cWildest Dreams\u201d and Elton John\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m Still Standing,\u201d Federhen didn\u2019t advance to the final group\u2014but she has no regrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRepresenting my small state on that stage was pretty remarkable,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut my biggest takeaway was being able to be so vulnerable, open, and honest about my struggles. Depression and anxiety are not exclusive to people who look sad all the time. The people with the biggest smiles in the room could be struggling the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up in the small southern Vermont town of Bennington, Federhen came from a single-parent home with a modest income, and was one of the few Hispanic residents; born with a neurological disorder that impacted her reading and writing comprehension, she says, she was the target of bullying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her first glimpse of the possibilities beyond her small community came when, at age eight, she met the then-reigning Miss Vermont at a parade. She was struck by her beauty\u2014but more so, by how she treated others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe made me feel important,\u201d recalls Federhen. \u201cThat interaction changed my entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year later, Federhen entered a \u201cjust for fun\u201d pageant at a county fair. The communal aspect hooked her, as did the volunteer opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>By high school, Federhen was participating in state-level competitions. The stakes were higher: not only did she have a shot at Miss America, but she could win scholarships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(And in fact, she would ultimately graduate from college debt free, thanks to support from the Miss America organization.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI fell in love with finding other people who cared about something larger than themselves,\u201d Federhen recalls. \u201cI know that sounds corny, and there are stereotypes around why people compete. One day, she\u2019s vlogging from the Rutland Whoopie Pie Festival, husking corn at a regional fair, or promoting maple products; the next, she\u2019s delivering the keynote address for Mental Health Advocacy Day, discussing her work developing an anti-bullying curriculum for K\u201312<sup> <\/sup>students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think people see the sash, and they assume I\u2019m there for pictures and then I\u2019m going to leave\u2014and I end up being there for five hours, helping clean up and talking to kids and community members,\u201d Federhen observes. \u201cMy low-key favorite part of being Miss Vermont is surprising people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Capturing the Miss Vermont title.
