How do you give them a sense of belonging? How do you make them feel part of something bigger than themselves? How do you make them feel welcome?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marseille, Port to Port<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>William Kornblum \u201961<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMarseille is a city for lovers, especially those with a sense of adventure and some historical imagination,\u201d Kornblum, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gc.cuny.edu\/people\/william-kornblum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">professor emeritus of sociology<\/a> at CUNY\u2019s Graduate Center, writes in the intro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Marseille you\u2019ll discover an ancient and joyful French seaport, bathed in Mediterranean sunshine and shaded in the ochre hues of Provence. About a third of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionsquareandco.com\/9781454944652\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new book<\/a> is devoted to the latter (which challenges solvers to find common letters among word pairs). <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The book also offers five other styles, appealing to a range of tastes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo By Two\u201d features mini \u201ccrisscrosses,\u201d where solvers must fill in a grid with consonants using only vowels as clues. In \u201cClueless Crosswords,\u201d players contend with blank squares to form seven-letter words, with multiple correct possibilities for each word\u2014but only one solution to the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For word jumble fans, \u201cMixagrams\u201d has sets of four- and five-letter words mixed up in correct letter order, which come together to answer the puzzle\u2019s punny title question. Similarly, in \u201cDouble Exposure,\u201d solvers use common words among columns of letters to form phrases at the end. And cruciverbalists who love hints might enjoy \u201cBits and Pieces,\u201d where sets of connected letters share crossword-esque clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shifting Currents<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Karen Lichtenbaum Carr \u201985<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subtitled <em>A World History of Swimming<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/en\/book\/show\/59249547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carr\u2019s book<\/a> traces aquatics through the ages, exploring its racial, gender, and political aspects\u2014including, for example, how the ability to swim has been connected to witchcraft and even used as justification for enslavement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she notes in her introduction, while swimming was ubiquitous around the globe millennia ago, today most people on Earth don\u2019t know how\u2014and the ability to do so often relates to race, income, and education. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"745\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/shifting-currents-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of &quot;Shifting Currents&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-17539 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/shifting-currents-A.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/shifting-currents-A-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/shifting-currents-A-265x395.jpg 265w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/shifting-currents-A-336x500.jpg 336w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/shifting-currents-A-168x250.jpg 168w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/shifting-currents-A-84x125.jpg 84w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSwimming is well suited to the establishment of cultural identity: it is fairly difficult to learn, especially as an adult, and impossible to fake,\u201d she writes. \u201cAs a shibboleth, swimming is very effective.\u201d An associate professor of history emerita at Portland State University, Carr previously penned <em>Vandals to Visigoths: Rural Settlement Patterns in Early Medieval Spain<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReaders coming to this social history of swimming expecting light-weight beach fare might be surprised by both its scope and the depth of its analysis,\u201d <em>BBC History Magazine<\/em> says of <em>Shifting Currents<\/em>. \u201cDrawing on archaeological, documentary, and visual sources from ancient cultures to the 20th century, it sketches the ways in which the ability to swim\u2014or, conversely, a suspicious inability to do so\u2014became markers of class, status, and moral virtue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"769\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/sabretooth-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of &quot;Sabretooth: The Adversary&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-17536 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/sabretooth-A.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/sabretooth-A-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/sabretooth-A-257x395.jpg 257w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/sabretooth-A-325x500.jpg 325w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/sabretooth-A-163x250.jpg 163w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/sabretooth-A-81x125.jpg 81w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sabretooth: The Adversary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Victor LaValle \u201994, BA \u201995<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LaValle, an <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/lavalle-author\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acclaimed writer<\/a> of literary horror, leaps into the Marvel universe as the author of comics centered around the villainous X-Men mutant. The five-issue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/collection\/94694\/sabretooth_the_adversary_trade_paperback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first series<\/a> is available as a paperback compendium (a second series, <em>Sabretooth &amp; the Exiles<\/em>, is also unfolding). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this tale set on an island nation that was supposed to be a paradise for mutants, LaValle deepens the character of Sabretooth\u2014a killer-for-hire historically written off as one-dimensional\u2014by viewing his wickedness through the lens of his lifelong imprisonment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arts &amp; Sciences alum has garnered numerous awards and honors, penning such novels as <em>The Ballad of Black Tom<\/em>, <em>The Ecstatic<\/em>, <em>Big Machine<\/em>, and <em>The Devil in Silver<\/em>. His 2017 horror-fantasy tale <em>The Changeling<\/em>\u2014which <em>Kirkus<\/em> lauded as a \u201csmart and knotty merger of horror, fantasy, and realism\u201d\u2014was recently adapted for an Apple TV series, likely launching in fall 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Devil\u2019s Fools<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mary Gilliland \u201973, MAT \u201980<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Says the publisher, Codhill Press: \u201cInfused with eco-logic, informed by feminism, and taking cues from Eve, Cain, Proserpine, Ulysses, Parsifal, and selves present and past, the 50 poems of <em>The Devil\u2019s Fools<\/em> question and illustrate myths of nature and the nature of inherited myth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codhill.com\/product\/the-devils-fools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poetry collection<\/a> is the latest from <a href=\"https:\/\/marygilliland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gilliland<\/a>, a retired Cornell faculty member who also penned 2020\u2019s <em>The Ruined Walled Castle Garden<\/em> and whose work has appeared in numerous literary journals. (The author has experience with the art form, having sung on the Hill with Cayuga\u2019s Waiters.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fictionalized take on Rapkin\u2019s book\u2014which focuses on acts at the University of Oregon, Tufts, and the University of Virginia\u2014formed the basis for the 2012 film starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson, plus two sequels.
