But a select few of these hardworking learners are not only destined for essential jobs, but are downright adorable: the half dozen or so puppies whom Cornellians are raising to become future Guiding Eyes dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have seen them in their little blue vests, looking irresistibly, fantastically cute as they accompany their humans (known as \u201craisers\u201d) around campus. Our dogs are really fortunate to get all of the experiences here that they do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roorda is president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/guidingeyesatcornell\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guiding Eyes at Cornell<\/a>, a student-run group dedicated to raising dogs\u2014mainly Labrador retrievers\u2014from puppyhood until they enter formal training as guide dogs when they\u2019re about a year and a half old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A big part of their training is addition to living with the dogs and socializing them, members take their furry charges to official training classes\u2014taught by the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guidingeyes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guiding Eyes for the Blind<\/a>, which provides the puppies and oversees their upbringing, including medical care\u2014as well as conducting daily one-on-one training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour dog is basically your little buddy on campus,\u201d says Zoe Weissbach \u201923, BS \u201922, who\u2019s raising a yellow Lab. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/geb_alec\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alec<\/a> comes with me to my classes, he\u2019ll sit in the raisers at any given time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others are \u201csitters\u201d\u2014students who take the dogs for short jaunts or who watch them when their raisers go on vacation\u2014a required step before becoming a raiser.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe dogs are kind of always working and getting exposure to different situations,\u201d says Weissbach, a recent civil engineering alum (she graduated a semester early). \u201cYou try to take them everywhere you can, but also teach them that they don\u2019t go <em>everywhere<\/em>; sometimes you have to leave them home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>And Guiding Eyes at Cornell is just one of the student groups on the Hill dedicated to raising future guide dogs; another, smaller one is <a href=\"https:\/\/cornell.campusgroups.com\/gebatcvm\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">based at the Vet College<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members include third-year students Vivian Lee \u201921 and Nardine Nasr, who have been co-raising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/geb_siggy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Siggy<\/a>, a yellow Lab.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img socialized in Stocking Hall.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For Lee, the group\u2019s past president, it\u2019s volunteer work that\u2019s particularly personal: her grandfather\u2014a photographer\u2014lost his sight a decade before he passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce he became blind, he was very depressed, and it impacted his daily life,\u201d she recalls. \u201cHe would always tell me how sad he was that he couldn\u2019t do the things he\u2019d been able to. For him, it would have been nice to have had a guide dog. So the reason I decided to be a raiser was so I could give back to someone else who was blind and in need of a companion, to help make their lives easier and more enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: Cornell students help raise and train future service dogs\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fESlSyYCD_g?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to co-raising Siggy, Nasr is raising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/geb_opus\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Opus<\/a>, a black Lab. She has taken one or the other of them to stores, restaurants, hotels\u2014even the National Mall in Washington, DC, and a Big Red hockey game in Lynah. Both future vets say the dogs have taught them a great deal about canine behavior, as well as patience and time management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also a great stress relief,\u201d observes Nasr, the group\u2019s past treasurer. \u201cEspecially some days where you\u2019re studying for hours on end, you can take a little break to take them out to the bathroom. And as a Guiding Eyes raiser, you gain access to a whole community of other raisers, who are there to help you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adds Lee: \u201cThere\u2019s just something about the love that dogs give you; it really is unconditional. Even when we have low days, where the training isn\u2019t going as well as we\u2019d want, he\u2019s still always there. And then the next day, he\u2019s ready to work and wants to make us happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There\u2019s just something about the love that dogs give you; it really is unconditional.<\/p>\n<cite>Third-year vet student<strong> Vivian Lee<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But as joyful and satisfying as it is to be a Guiding Eyes raiser, it inevitably involves sacrifice: relinquishing a dog they\u2019ve reared since puppyhood, who\u2019s bonded to them and vice versa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI honestly still haven\u2019t grappled with it, because he really is my baby,\u201d says Lee. \u201cI definitely didn\u2019t expect it to be as emotional. When the dogs return to the organization, they\u2019re assessed for their potential as guides to the visually impaired; they may instead become another type of service dog or work in such areas as detection or search and rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, for reasons of temperament or trainability, they may be deemed unsuitable to be working animals, and are adopted as pets. Their puppy raisers have first dibs\u2014followed by a very long waiting list of hopeful families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiving them back does not get easier,\u201d Roorda admits. \u201cBut you go into it knowing what you\u2019re raising them for, and we constantly keep that in mind. We\u2019re really proud of their successes.
