How a lost notebook became a Big Red tale of human connection, Internet sleuthing\u2014and kittens<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fall 2022, two Cornellians stumbled upon a soggy composition book behind the A.D. White House. As they flipped through its pages, they quickly realized it was no ordinary notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first 36 pages contained a hodgepodge of entries\u2014poems, lecture notes, lists, trip itineraries\u2014all in the same handwriting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But on page 37, it took a turn: letters, drawings, and even dried flowers and leaves, clearly contributed by dozens of people over a several-month journey around the Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After much deliberation, the couple decided to try to track down the notebook\u2019s owner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their most promising clue: the word \u201cSPOON,\u201d written neatly in black ink on the cover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A week of research, one shot-in-the-dark email, and an hour of Twitter chatter later, the mystery was solved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before all that, this story\u2014like much else on the Internet\u2014starts with cats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Two kittens, actually. They\u2019d been mewing under a section of the A.D. White House for days, though Cheryl Qian \u201924 and Krzysztof Hochlewicz \u201921\u2014an undergrad in Human Ecology and an alum working as a software engineer, respectively\u2014also spotted one scurrying past Malott Hall toward the Ag Quad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qian and Hochlewicz started feeding the kittens, setting out to capture them. On their third day, they decided to cover more ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Qian sat watch on the A.D. White lawn, Hochlewicz walked the perimeter. Five hours into the stakeout, he strolled behind the building and into a garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t find the kittens, but he did find the notebook\u2014along with a pen\u2014sitting in a plastic bag on a bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRight away, I knew this was interesting,\u201d recalls Hochlewicz. \u201cPeople don\u2019t typically carry around their notebooks and pens in a Ziploc bag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a poorly secured one, at that; it had rained the previous two days, and the notebook was sopping wet. A millipede had found its way inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as Hochlewicz delicately leafed through its pages, he was struck by the distinctly contrasting sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first half was clearly penned by one person, the second half written by many others, with entry after entry addressed to the same recipient: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDear Spoon.\u201d \u201cHi Spoon.\u201d \u201cTo the one called Spoon.\u201d \u201cSpoon!\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entries varied wildly. Some were sparse on words, featuring sketches. Some were melancholy, others were cheery, and a handful were (ahem)<\/em> \u201cnot safe for work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few authors wrote anonymously, while others offered names and phone numbers. One person pressed leaves between the pages; another left a lipstick kiss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Says Hochlewicz: \u201cIt seemed like something worth saving.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it didn’t help, he adds, that the eco-friendly notebook was designed to biodegrade quickly and \u201cwas on the verge of deteriorating. I thought, \u2018If I just leave it, it probably won\u2019t be here tomorrow.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>

Hochlewicz took the notebook home and spent three hours gingerly separating the pages with paper towels and a hairdryer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of the messages were very uplifting and encouraging,\u201d says Qian. \u201cWe wanted Spoon to be able to receive them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Determined to learn their identity, she went online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qian had noted that Spoon\u2019s writings included themes like veganism and anarchism, as well as detailed plans to travel to San Francisco for interviews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She zeroed in on a line of poetry: \u201cI can beat five felony charges, effortlessly<\/em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That tidbit led Qian to her first potential Spoon: journalist Keri Blakinger \u201911, BA \u201914<\/a>, author of the bestselling memoir Corrections in Ink<\/em>, in which she recounts the nearly two years she spent incarcerated on drug charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hochlewicz emailed Blakinger, with the subject line: \u201cAre you \u2018Spoon\u2019? Found something in Ithaca that might be yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Blakinger wasn\u2019t Spoon, she was intrigued\u2014and wanted to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI figured I had a large enough Twitter following, with enough people who\u2019d be in Ithaca or connected to academia, that I might actually be able to get someone to respond,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-October, Blakinger laid out the story in a lengthy tweet thread before putting out the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She asked her followers to contact her \u201cif you know a Cornell-lurking anarcho-feminist who is not me and has an interest in veganism, penchant for interviewing people, disdain for society, and love of handwritten notebooks and occasional trips to SF.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plea took off, and was shared by former Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick \u201909 (who has nearly 25,000 Twitter followers).<\/p>\n<\/div>

Within an hour, one of Spoon\u2019s friends from campus messaged him\u2014and he soon took to the platform himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is so fun\u2014hi, I\u2019m Spoon! It\u2019s a nickname from my house. I love what happened with the notebook,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doctoral student\u00a0Spencer Beswick, MA \u201920<\/a>, is a Montana native studying history on the Hill. He had purchased the object in question at Ithaca\u2019s GreenStar Food Co-op in summer 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beswick is also a volunteer with Food Not Bombs, a collective that serves free meals to the hungry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through that work, he has amassed a surplus of spoons\u2014inspiring some former housemates to give him his now-famous nickname.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought I must be in some kind of trouble if somebody is messaging me on Twitter asking me if I\u2019m Spoon,\u201d recalls Beswick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut then I saw the tweet thread, and it was so fun. All these people were engaging with this mystery together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of the notebook\u2019s contents\u2014including the poem that led Qian to Blakinger\u2014relates to his dissertation research on\u00a0<\/strong>the history of late-20th-century anarchism, work that had been stymied by the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were finally emerging from COVID, I was planning research trips, and I was getting excited about the possibility of doing the thing I was here to do,\u201d he recalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor me, the notebook symbolized that changes were happening, and that life felt like it was moving again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was before he accidentally left it on Libe Slope in April 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time Qian and Hochlewicz reunited Beswick with his notebook nearly six months later, he says, it had turned into something much bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why, with Beswick\u2019s blessing, Hochlewicz digitized and shared it on Reddit<\/a>, after redacting some information that identified particular individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, after contributing his own message, Hochlewicz released the notebook back into the wild near the Ag Quad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hopefully, it\u2019s still in circulation somewhere on the Hill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(If you find it\u2014you know what to do.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But wait\u2014what about the kittens that started it all?<\/p>\n<\/div>
