White House. They\u2019d been mewing under a section of the A.D. White House for days, though Cheryl Qian \u201924 and Krzysztof Hochlewicz \u201921\u2014an undergrad in Human Ecology and an alum working as a software engineer, respectively\u2014also spotted one scurrying past Malott Hall toward the Ag Quad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Qian and Hochlewicz started feeding the kittens, setting out to capture them. On their third day, they decided to cover more ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Qian sat watch on the A.D. White lawn, Hochlewicz walked the perimeter. Five hours into the stakeout, he strolled behind the building and into a garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>He didn\u2019t find the kittens, but he did find the notebook\u2014along with a pen\u2014sitting in a plastic bag on a bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRight away, I knew this was interesting,\u201d recalls Hochlewicz. \u201cPeople don\u2019t typically carry around their notebooks and pens in a Ziploc bag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a poorly secured one, at that; it had rained the previous two days, and the notebook was sopping wet. Some were sparse on words, featuring sketches. We wanted Spoon to be able to receive them.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Cheryl Qian \u201924<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Qian had noted that Spoon\u2019s writings included themes like veganism and anarchism, as well as detailed plans to travel to San Francisco for interviews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She zeroed in on a line of poetry: <em>\u201cI can beat five felony charges, effortlessly<\/em>.<em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That tidbit led Qian to her first potential Spoon: journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/blakinger-memoir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keri Blakinger \u201911, BA \u201914<\/a>, author of the bestselling memoir <em>Corrections in Ink<\/em>, in which she recounts the nearly two years she spent incarcerated on drug charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<section aria-label=\"Image Carousel\" class=\"wp-block-rkv-carousel rkv-swiper swiper\"><div class=\"alignfull swiper-buttons\"><div class=\"swiper-button-prev\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-button-next\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"swiper-wrapper\"><figure class=\"rkv-carousel__image swiper-slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/20221016_165832-A.jpg\" alt=\"A stone birdbath in a garden located behind A.D. It\u2019s a nickname from my house. I love what happened with the notebook,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctoral student\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/history.cornell.edu\/spencer-beswick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Beswick, MA \u201920<\/a>, is a Montana native studying history on the Hill.
