Here\u2019s a look back at some notable storms!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">While winter on East Hill offers its share of excitement and challenges\u2014from ice, wind, and precipitating \u201cIthacation\u201d to bitterly cold temperatures\u2014the snow is often what Cornellians remember most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps surprisingly, with a seasonal average measuring around 44 inches a year, Ithaca is not known as a record-setter when it comes to snowfall. Nearby Buffalo and Syracuse make headlines (and post bigger numbers) more often\u2014but when blizzards and other weather systems affect Cornell, they often do so in a Big (Red) way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s partly due to the region\u2019s geography. Those late-winter, early-spring storms (several of which are recalled below) can be followed by significant flooding once the weather warms\u2014often just a day or two afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Read on for some of the most notable blizzards in Cornell and Ithaca history\u2014and add your own memories in the comments!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Blizzard of 1993 <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often dubbed the \u201cstorm of the century,\u201d it wasn\u2019t technically a Nor\u2019easter but rather an \u201cEast Texas low\u201d that moved out of the Gulf of Mexico and went up the East Coast, dumping moisture along the way. As the <em>Cornell Chronicle<\/em> reported, some 30 librarians still walked to campus\u2014many through hip-high snow\u2014to open Olin, Mann, and Uris that Sunday so students could study for prelims. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous employees slept on campus to feed Cornellians, with some students filling in for shifts in the dining halls and elsewhere. Dozens of animal-care technicians worked through the storm and traveled by snowmobile and on foot to deliver fresh hay to pastured animals and to thaw water supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campus reopened at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16\u2014and it took a week to fully remove the snow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>Valentine\u2019s Day 2007<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>A quickly developing storm that hit the area on the morning of February 14 dumped about 17 inches of snow on the Hill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University announced it would shut at 12:30 p.m.\u2014though the county had just declared a state of emergency and closed the roads at noon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the snow totals weren\u2019t record-breaking, the closure timing caused a logistical mess. Because of or in spite of them, a tolerable lunch and supper were served.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University re-opened at 1 p.m. the following day. Said the <em>Sun<\/em>: \u201cA snow fort built on the Arts Quad became a white dragon and Collegetown was graced by a 10-foot totem pole.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>The great snowball fight of 2010<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 25\u00ad\u201326, a storm (dubbed a potential \u201csnow-palooza\u201d by some forecasters) dropped 21.7 inches, causing the University to delay its opening for one morning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eighteen inches of the total fell during a 24-hour period. Much damage to campus trees was also reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 December 1944 and January 1945 saw an average temperature of just 14.8 degrees\u2014and more than 80 inches of snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 In early 1961, a snowstorm impacted the long-awaited debut of Olin Library. While the building opened as planned on February 6, a record 26 inches that had fallen during the prior two days delayed the transfer of some materials from Uris (then known as Main Library), limiting operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The March record for snowfall during a 24-hour period was set in 1984, with 16.5 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The second-largest storm of the \u201990s hit in January 1997.
