{"id":15310,"date":"2023-01-12T16:38:53","date_gmt":"2023-01-12T21:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=15310"},"modified":"2023-01-27T08:52:52","modified_gmt":"2023-01-27T13:52:52","slug":"wildllife-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wildllife-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Protecting All Creatures, Great and Small\u2014Around the Globe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">From Ithaca to the plains of southern Africa, the Cornell Wildlife Health Center is working to heal the natural world<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Lindsay Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">\u201cSynergy.\u201d It\u2019s a buzzword in business. We\u2019re trying to make sure it\u2019s there in 100 years, and 1,000 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That work is being done across the globe\u2014from investigating emerging, deadly diseases in fish in the Great Lakes to protecting rhinos from potential health threats in Nepal and Indonesia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure Transfrontier Conservation Area\u2014a 200,000-square-mile swath of southern Africa spanning five countries that\u2019s home to the world\u2019s largest remaining elephant population\u2014Osofsky and colleagues lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.cornell.edu\/our-work\/ahead-animal-human-health-environment-and-development\/beyond-fences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beyond Fences<\/a> project.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It aims to alleviate decades of wild migration disruption caused by fencing that first appeared in the 1950s to shield southern Africa\u2019s beef trade from the effects of foot-and-mouth disease carried by wild buffalo\u2014but which also began blocking the ancient migration paths of the region\u2019s elephants, wildebeests, and other wildlife. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By working to advance less fence-dependent approaches to disease mitigation, the center hopes to see not just a rebound in these declining wildlife populations, but also make beef markets more accessible to rural farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We\u2019re all trying to save the world, and coming at it from different ways.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Steve Osofsky, DVM \u201989, <\/strong>Cornell Wildlife Health Center director<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Beyond Fences, much of the center\u2019s work underscores the profound connection between wildlife health and human vitality\u2014and promotes the concept that conservation has a clear positive impact on the physical and financial wellbeing of communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen Lee \u201903, MBA \u201920, traveled deep into the <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.cornell.edu\/our-work\/wild-carnivores\/snow-leopards-and-local-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mountains of Tajikistan<\/a> on such an initiative in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by the center\u2019s wild<strong> <\/strong>carnivore health specialist (Martin Gilbert, an associate professor of practice in population medicine and diagnostic sciences) in tandem with local partners, the ongoing project aims to help livestock farmers increase profits and improve herd health\u2014while reducing their footprints and sustainably coexisting with the region\u2019s wild goats, sheep, and snow leopards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just wildlife health,\u201d says Lee, the center\u2019s conservation and livelihoods advisor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s human health, agriculture, community livelihoods, climate change, the business sector\u2014there are so many interweaving Wildlife Fund, which found that the planet\u2019s wild animal populations collectively shrank by nearly 70 percent from 1970 to 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human population growth, meanwhile, has gone full steam in the other direction\u2014from 3 to 8 billion since the 1960s, and projected to swell to 10 billion in the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve met the enemy, if you will,\u201d says Osofsky. \u201cAnd it\u2019s us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A bright spot, he notes, is that those human numbers will likely peak and then plateau. Swanson Wildlife Hospital<\/a>, which treats sick and injured creatures\u2014as the website notes, \u201cfrom chickadees to cottontail rabbits, bobcats to bald eagles\u201d\u2014that are native to the Northeast region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And starting in July 2023, the hospital will serve as home base for the center\u2019s first-ever internship in wildlife health.
