{"id":15269,"date":"2023-01-10T13:20:30","date_gmt":"2023-01-10T18:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=15269"},"modified":"2024-04-23T09:47:23","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T13:47:23","slug":"alumni-congress-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/alumni-congress-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"CU in Congress: Alumni in the House"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left rkv-gutter-bottom-triple has-large-font-size\">The seven Cornellians serving as representatives in D.C. include military veterans, businesspeople, and even a former MMA fighter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Ever since John DeWitt Warner 1872 headed to Washington, D.C., in 1891 to serve as a representative from NYC, dozens of Cornellians have held seats in Congress, including five in the Senate and more than 50 in the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are seven alumni in the 118th Congress. It is a modern Big Red high eclipsed only by the 112th Congress (2011\u201313), which included not only seven alums in the House, but also Mark Kirk \u201981, who represented Illinois in the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Here\u2019s a look at the alumni currently serving on the Hill:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-default\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Katherine Clark, JD \u201989<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A sixth-term Democrat, <a href=\"https:\/\/katherineclark.house.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clark represents Massachusetts\u2019s Fifth District<\/a>, which includes a diverse mix of cities and towns north and west of Boston, including Cambridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2023, she was sworn in as the House minority whip, becoming the legislative body\u2019s second-highest ranking Democrat. In addition to her JD, she earned an undergrad degree from St. Lawrence University and an MPA from Harvard\u2019s Kennedy School of Government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is part of a Cornellian family: her husband is Rodney \u201cScott\u201d Dowell, JD \u201989, and her father was H. Davids is also now serving as a regional whip for the Democrats in the 118th Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, Davids was raised by a single mother who was an Army drill sergeant; she has trained in mixed martial arts and was a professional MMA fighter after attending the University of Missouri and Cornell Law School. She worked as a White House fellow during the Obama Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wesley Hunt, MBA \u201915, MPA \u201915, MILR \u201916<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The newest Cornellian in Congress, Hunt is a Republican in his first term <a href=\"https:\/\/hunt.house.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">representing Texas\u2019s new 38th District<\/a>, which includes Houston suburbs. He has also been a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus, the Republican Study Committee, the Border Security Caucus, the Congressional Coal Caucus, and the U.S.-China Working Group.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>His priorities include revitalizing his district\u2019s communities through jobs and economic growth; strengthening the district\u2019s coal industry while also helping workers access training programs; and national and border security. Meuser attended New York Maritime University (now SUNY Maritime College) before transferring to Cornell on a Navy ROTC scholarship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was an executive at Pride Health Care, later known as Pride Mobility Products, a healthcare products manufacturer. In 2011, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett nominated him to serve as the state\u2019s secretary of revenue; he led the department until he ran for Congress in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elissa Slotkin \u201998 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The CALS alum is a Democrat in her third term and is now <a href=\"https:\/\/slotkin.house.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">representing Michigan&#8217;s redrawn Seventh District<\/a>, which is centered on the state capital of Lansing and spans the middle of the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has previously served on the Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Veterans\u2019 Affairs committees. After earning her undergrad degree in rural sociology from Cornell, she obtained her master\u2019s from Columbia\u2019s School of International and Public Affairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slotkin worked as a Middle East analyst for the CIA, including three tours in Iraq as a militia expert, and in several defense and intelligence positions for the White House and Office of the Director of National Intelligence. She has served on the Space, Science, and Technology Committee and the Natural Resources Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beth Van Duyne \u201995 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arts &amp; Sciences alum is a Republican in her second term <a href=\"https:\/\/vanduyne.house.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">representing Texas\u2019s 24th District<\/a>, which includes portions of Tarrant, Denton, and Dallas counties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she first won her seat in 2020, she became only the second Republican woman from Texas elected to the U.S. House.
