With help from an alum\/postdoc, he now sports \u2018doggles\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This story has been condensed from <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2022\/12\/doggles-booties-keep-students-service-dog-safe-lab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>a feature<\/em><\/a><em> in the <\/em>Cornell Chronicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Caitlin Hayes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When Genesis Contreras \u201924 transferred to Cornell earlier this year, she wanted to gain research experience in a lab. But there was a challenge: Contreras relies on a service dog to warn her of sudden and debilitating headaches and fainting spells\u2014and, due to potential hazards, even service dogs are often prohibited in a lab setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, Contreras needed her dog to keep her safe in the lab\u2014but the dog, a four-year-old beagle named Nugget, needed to be safe in the lab as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple faculty and staff at Cornell worked collaboratively with Contreras, an animal science major in CALS, to find a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now Nugget works in the lab in full personal protective equipment (PPE), including booties, a custom lab jacket, and dog goggles\u2014a.k.a. \u201cdoggles.\u201d He sits on a designated mat alongside Contreras, as she studies the threatened eastern hellbender salamander in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cwhl.vet.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell Wildlife Health Lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe work we\u2019re doing is important, but it gives me so much relief, too,\u201d Contreras observes. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel like I\u2019m running a race with an end, which is how classes can sometimes feel: the work is really heavy, and then you get a grade. Genesis is an awesome scientist\u2014she\u2019s going to do incredibly well in whatever she chooses to do.
