Posthumous festschrift<\/em> and 2023 conference in NYC will celebrate eminent historian\u2019s impact\u2014on former students and worldwide<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is, perhaps, no Cornell faculty member more deserving of a festschrift<\/em> than the late, legendary historian Walter LaFeber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German term\u2014which translates as \u201cfeast writing\u201d\u2014refers to a collection of papers by multiple authors, written as a tribute to a noted scholar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typically created upon retirement and presented at a conference or symposium, it celebrates the academic\u2019s long career, research contributions, and impact on former students and society at large. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For LaFeber\u2014who taught on the Hill<\/a> for nearly a half century (from 1959\u20132004) and who passed away at age 87 in 2021\u2014that impact was immense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His famed lectures were events<\/em>, attended by tens of thousands of students over the years. He influenced decades of thought leaders in foreign affairs, diplomacy, and academia\u2014authoring or co-authoring 20 books (including the well-known textbook The American Age<\/em><\/a>) and appearing regularly in the media, offering a historian\u2019s insight on U.S. global relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late October, a cadre of just over a dozen of LaFeber\u2019s former students\u2014referring to themselves fondly as the \u201cLaFeber posse\u201d\u2014gathered on the Ithaca campus to workshop their essays and chapters for the festschrift<\/em>, to be published by Cornell University Press and which will also be available as an open-access ebook. <\/p>\n<\/div>

They also developed plans for a companion conference, which is set for next fall (October 27\u201329, 2023) on the Cornell Tech campus in New York City and will be open to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its title\u2014\u201cThinking Otherwise: Walter LaFeber and American Foreign Relations in a Changing World\u201d\u2014derives from a phrase, attributed to Cornell historian Carl Becker, that LaFeber liked to cite: \u201cA professor is someone who thinks otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festschrift<\/em> and conference (for which details will be forthcoming) will occur in what would have been LaFeber\u2019s 90th birthday year, as well as the 60th anniversary of the publication of his first book, The New Empire<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrew Tisch \u201971\u2014co-chair of Loews Corp., a philanthropist, and an emeritus University trustee\u2014recalls how he first discovered LaFeber\u2019s foreign policy course as an undergraduate. He was having coffee with a friend, who quickly finished and told Tisch he was \u201cgoing to Walt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t, \u2018I\u2019m going to hear Professor LaFeber,\u2019\u201d Tisch recalls. \u201cIt was just, \u2018I\u2019m going to Walt.\u2019 I said, \u2018What\u2019s Walt?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tisch ended up tagging along, and was hooked. Even though he was a Hotelie with a full schedule and couldn\u2019t transfer into the class, Tisch ended up auditing both semesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, that course packed auditoriums on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and\u2014amazingly\u2014Saturdays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an outline of the lecture on a blackboard behind him, LaFeber would speak without notes, bringing to life that day\u2019s journey through U.S. history, influence, and foreign relations. Each session typically ended with a standing ovation.<\/p>\n\n\n

It was such a draw that students often brought their weekend guests\u2014whether visiting parents or significant others\u2014to the Saturday morning lectures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tisch notes, only half in jest, that LaFeber\u2019s class probably nurtured quite a few romances: \u201cThe great pickup line was, \u2018Do you want to stay over and go hear Walt tomorrow?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immerman, for one, has a theory about the course\u2019s massive enrollment in the \u201960s and \u201970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was the middle of the Vietnam War,\u201d he says. \u201cWe all wanted to learn about foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adds Tisch: \u201cThe world was going to hell, and we wanted to understand why.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several of LaFeber\u2019s students went on to become noted figures in U.S. foreign policy, including the late Sandy Berger \u201967 (national security adviser to President Bill Clinton), Stephen Hadley \u201969 (national security adviser to President George W. Bush), Eric Edelman \u201972 (former ambassador to Turkey and undersecretary of defense), and Tom Downey \u201970 (a former longtime member of Congress).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the U.S. bicentennial year in 1976, Cornell President Dale Corson broke with tradition by asking LaFeber to deliver the Commencement address to that year\u2019s graduates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in the days following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, President Hunter Rawlings III asked him to speak at the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance<\/a>, held on the Arts Quad with some 12,000 people in attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tisch notes that LaFeber\u2019s influence went far beyond the relatively small number of his students who went into careers in government or foreign policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI represent the other 98 percent,\u201d he says. \u201cIt gave me a lifelong passion for understanding government, governance, and diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>

In 2002, Tisch and his brother (James Tisch \u201975) endowed a professorship in their names, aimed at keeping senior faculty in the classroom even beyond retirement. LaFeber, its inspiration, was also its first recipient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(After LaFeber’s death, Tisch and his wife gave a gift to name a professorship in his honor in Arts & Sciences; it\u2019s currently held by Tom Pepinsky<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LaFeber gave a farewell lecture<\/a> in 2006\u2014packing the Beacon Theatre in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 3,000 alumni, faculty, and friends attended his talk, \u201cA Half-Century of Friends, Foreign Policy, and Great Losers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was delivered, of course, without notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
