He influenced decades of thought leaders in foreign affairs, diplomacy, and academia\u2014authoring or co-authoring 20 books (including the well-known textbook <a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9780393964752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The American Age<\/em><\/a>) and appearing regularly in the media, offering a historian\u2019s insight on U.S. global relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In late October, a cadre of just over a dozen of LaFeber\u2019s former students\u2014referring to themselves fondly as the \u201cLaFeber posse\u201d\u2014gathered on the Ithaca campus to workshop their essays and chapters for the <em>festschrift<\/em>, to be published by Cornell University Press and which will also be available as an open-access ebook. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" 2023) on the Cornell Tech campus in New York City and will be open to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its title\u2014\u201cThinking Otherwise: Walter LaFeber and American Foreign Relations in a Changing World\u201d\u2014derives from a phrase, attributed to Cornell historian Carl Becker, that LaFeber liked to cite: \u201cA professor is someone who thinks otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>festschrift<\/em> and conference (for which details will be forthcoming) will occur in what would have been LaFeber\u2019s 90th birthday year, as well as the 60th anniversary of the publication of his first book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/book\/9780801485954\/the-new-empire\/#bookTabs=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The New Empire<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen Walt died, a number of us got together and started talking about what we could do to memorialize the individual who had been our favorite teacher,\u201d says Richard Immerman \u201971, an emeritus professor of history at Temple University. \u201cHe was all of our favorite, and that in itself was really quite exceptional\u2014but so was he.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>He was all of our favorite, and that in itself was really quite exceptional\u2014but so was he.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Richard Immerman \u201971<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Tisch \u201971\u2014co-chair of Loews Corp., a philanthropist, and an emeritus University trustee\u2014recalls how he first discovered LaFeber\u2019s foreign policy course as an undergraduate. He was having coffee with a friend, who quickly finished and told Tisch he was \u201cgoing to Walt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t, \u2018I\u2019m going to hear Professor LaFeber,\u2019\u201d Tisch recalls. \u201cIt was just, \u2018I\u2019m going to Walt.\u2019 I said, \u2018What\u2019s Walt?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tisch ended up tagging along, and was hooked. Even though he was a Hotelie with a full schedule and couldn\u2019t transfer into the class, Tisch ended up auditing both semesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, that course packed auditoriums on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and\u2014amazingly\u2014Saturdays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an outline of the lecture on a blackboard behind him, LaFeber would speak without notes, bringing to life that day\u2019s journey through U.S. history, influence, and foreign relations.
