CVM\u2019s Beloved Mini Horse Is a Big Red Star"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Saved by Cornell vets, the wee critter has become a campus celebrity\u2014and an equine \u2018nurse\u2019 to nervous patients<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Beth Saulnier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Among the many dignitaries at the 2017 inauguration of President Martha Pollack was an unofficial ambassador from one of Cornell\u2019s colleges. Though petite in stature and unassuming by nature, this quiet charmer couldn\u2019t help drawing the eye, sparking wonder and inspiring smiles from everyone she met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her official name: Cinnamon Sprinkle. But in honor of her effervescent personality, she\u2019s known as Cinnamon <em>Sparkle<\/em>. (Usually, all three.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>She exemplifies how much joy animals bring to our lives.<\/p><cite><strong>Sarah Bassman<\/strong>, Minnie&#8217;s wrangler and beautician<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As befits a star, Minnie is blinged out for the occasion in Big Red style: her hooves have been painted with glitter polish, and her mane and tail sport ribbons that Bassman has expertly plaited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The many students, faculty, and staff who admire her as she ambles from CVM to the Arts Quad and back are even rewarded with a collector\u2019s item: an oval sticker emblazoned with her photo and \u201cI met Minnie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: Miss Minnie: On the Hoof! \ud83d\udc34\u2764\ufe0f\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nsMEr9fnSjk?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the tiny horse\u2019s biggest fans is CALS alum Ariana Harris \u201902, BS \u201905. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A longtime licensed veterinary technician (LVT) on the Hill, she serves as Minnie\u2019s daily caretaker\u2014making sure she gets regular vaccinations, hoof trims, and the like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s very outgoing and friendly,\u201d Harris observes. \u201cShe likes to be the center of attention. Some horses are a bit more shy and not as personable. But whenever you walk into the barn, she\u2019s vocal\u2014and will whinny to you if her lunch is late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img complications and needed extensive care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were worried she would not make it, because of how sick she became,\u201d recalls LVT Kalli Anderson-Dyer. \u201cShe was in very rough buddy for the hospital\u2019s blood donor, Mike, a Belgian draft horse who was thought to be in need of company. He had never been off his farm before, and\u2014being a herd animal\u2014was upset that there were no other horses in the ICU at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe brought Minnie in and placed her in the stall across from him\u2014but it didn\u2019t help, because he couldn\u2019t see her, since she\u2019s short,\u201d Anderson-Dyer recalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo we set up one of our alpaca corrals in front of his stall, and he would nap right in front of her.
