Just in time for its golden anniversary, the brief-but-mighty display of Cornell spirit returns to NYC<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a drizzly evening last summer, Alice Katz Berglas \u201966 was having her nightly wind-down on a bench by NYC\u2019s East River\u2014clad, as it happens, in a Cornell T-shirt. As the sun set and she started toward home, she recalls, a man started pointing at her from afar, \u201cshrieking something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he drew closer, she deciphered his hollering: \u201cDo you know about the Sy Katz Parade? Do you know about the Sy Katz Parade?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all the Big Red alumni in the city\u2014or, for that matter, on the planet\u2014that stranger (who, as it turned out, had no connection to Cornell) couldn\u2019t have run into someone who knew more <\/em>about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrated as NYC\u2019s \u201cshortest parade with the longest history,\u201d the biennial Sy Katz \u201931 Parade<\/a> is named in honor of its founder: Katz Berglas\u2019s father, Seymour, a devoted Cornellian and ardent supporter of the Big Red Marching Band who passed away in 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First held in 1972, the parade marks its 50th anniversary this year\u2014bringing its boisterous Cornellian spirit back to Midtown the Saturday before Thanksgiving (November 19). The much-anticipated return comes after COVID forced the parade\u2019s first-ever cancellation in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though its length and route have varied over the years, the parade\u2019s signature sights and sounds endure: a sea of Big Red marching through the heart of NYC to the roar of \u201cGive My Regards to Davy\u201d echoing through the corridor of skyscrapers (not to mention the hum of hundreds of kazoos). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2008, then-mayor Michael Bloomberg even declared November 15 \u201cSy Katz Day\u201d in NYC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event traditionally follows a Cornell vs. Columbia<\/a> football game, and 2022 is no different, as the Big Red face the Lions in their home stadium at the northern tip of Manhattan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Party moves outside<\/strong>: 5:45 p.m., 44th St. between 5th & Madison <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheer the band<\/strong>: approx. 6:15 p.m., outside Cornell Club<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tailgate party<\/strong>: 7 p.m., Cornell Club, 6 E. 44th St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past grand marshals have included Cornell President Martha Pollack and former New York Governor David Paterson. (As the latter, a Columbia grad, quipped: “Today, for the first time, I rooted for my alma mater to lose\u2014and they won.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n

This year, the grand marshal isn\u2019t a person, but a beloved Big Red institution: the <\/strong>Cornell Club, with longtime general manager Craig Lasnier and colleagues marching at the head of the procession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honorary grand marshal status goes to Bill Welker \u201973, MBA \u201975 (drum major of the first Katz Parade a half-century ago), and Brian Adelman \u201909, chair of the Big Red Band Alumni Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Cornellians seeking a warm place to gather before taking to the streets, a pre-parade party will be held at Caf\u00e9 346<\/a> (the former Brooks Brothers store). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revelers will then head outside\u2014in a departure from previous years, they will cheer from the sidelines but won’t be marching\u2014and the band will commence its short-but-epic commute, ending in front of the Cornell Club\u2013New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy father had a dream of a parade for the Big Red Marching Band down the streets of New York,\u201d says Katz Berglas, who has long shared stewardship of the event with her brother, Bob Katz \u201969, and Rhodes Award-winning<\/a> alumni volunteer Penny Haitkin \u201965. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was filled with pride when he would say, \u2018No other Ivy has its very own parade in New York City.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
