A life-size portrait of Ezra Cornell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Painted by a leading 19th-century artist whose other subjects include heads of state on two continents, the immense work depicts the University\u2019s founder dressed formally in a dark suit coat, standing by an ornate table bearing his top hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He holds a note in one hand\u2014perhaps his musings on creating a university?\u2014as he gazes thoughtfully into the distance, his face illuminated by an unseen light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a true likeness,\u201d says Ezra Cornell \u201970, BS \u201971, the founder\u2019s great-great-great grandson, \u201cand serves to remind us that what he did and accomplished was of huge importance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An inventor and entrepreneur who made his fortune in the early telegraph industry, Ezra served in the New York State legislature (where he met future University president A.D. White) in the 1860s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But his lasting legacy came in founding Cornell\u2014as he famously envisioned it, \u201can institution where any person can find instruction in any study\u201d\u2014and, arguably, creating the modern American research university: nonsectarian, egalitarian, and with a mission to positively impact society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The painting, which hangs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysl.nysed.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State Library<\/a>, was commissioned in 1893 to mark the 25th anniversary of Cornell opening to students in 1868.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It is a true likeness.<\/p><cite><strong>Ezra Cornell \u201970<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It was funded by a state appropriations bill that earmarked at least $3,000 to the project, \u201cas an evidence of the grateful appreciation of the people of the State of New York for his eminent services in behalf of the cause of higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would, sadly, be a posthumous likeness: Ezra had died in 1874, at the age of 67.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The artist who won the commission was John Colin Forbes, a Canadian well-known in the era for his true-to-life depictions in oil of prime ministers, royalty (including Britain\u2019s King Edward VII), and several U.S. presidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally displayed in the Capitol Building when the State Library was located there, Forbes\u2019s Ezra portrait moved\u2014along with the library and its holdings\u2014to the Education Department building across the street in 1912.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ezra in Art<\/strong>: A Pictorial Tour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<section aria-label=\"Image Carousel\" class=\"wp-block-rkv-carousel rkv-swiper swiper\"><div class=\"alignfull swiper-buttons\"><div class=\"swiper-button-prev\"><\/div><div class=\"swiper-button-next\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"swiper-wrapper\"><figure class=\"rkv-carousel__image swiper-slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Uris_Ezra_portrait.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Ezra Cornell that has been on display in Uris Library since 1899\" data-src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Uris_Ezra_portrait.jpg\" \/><figcaption>Shortly after completing the Albany portrait, John Colin Forbes painted a nearly identical version for the Ithaca campus.
