By Tom Fleischman<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At an age when most professionals are well into retirement, Don Greenberg \u201955, BCE \u201958, PhD \u201968, has shown few signs of slowing down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sure, he feels every bit of his 88 years on occasion\u2014\u201cI mean, I\u2019m getting old,\u201d he says\u2014but when his day begins, he\u2019s as spry as someone half his age, or younger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI usually get up at around 6, make a very simple breakfast, and all of a sudden my mind is going\u2014I can\u2019t wait to come in and start working on something new,\u201d says Greenberg, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Computer Graphics<\/a> in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Greenberg\u2014whose father, sister, two uncles, wife (Iris Marcus Greenberg \u201958, MS \u201964), and three children went to Cornell\u2014isn\u2019t just teaching the same old things he\u2019s taught since he started at his alma mater more than 50 years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n As he\u2019s done his entire career, he\u2019s pushing the boundaries of his fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This semester, he has launched a new undergraduate and graduate course for students in both architecture and computer science, who will learn and apply emerging digital visualization tools and software for designing the built environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p> As Greenberg has done his entire career, he\u2019s pushing the boundaries of his fields.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n \u201cDesign in the Age of Digital Twins\u201d expands the realm of 3D digital design by enabling architects and engineers to visually demonstrate, in real time, the effects of such factors as energy use, sunlight, and extreme weather events early in the design process, when strategic decisions are made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Greenberg has been laying the groundwork for digital twins since the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn a proposal to the National Science Foundation back then, I said I\u2019d like to be able to make pictures that are physically accurate, and perceptually indistinguishable, from real-world scenes,\u201d recalls Greenberg, founding director of the multidisciplinary Program of Computer Graphics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n![\"A](\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/2022_1262_JK_006-1024x576.jpg\")
