class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In a gently sloping space out front, the recently created Class of 1971 Medicinal Garden offers a burst of natural beauty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it has an apt theme: nearly every plant in it has been used in health, wellness, or beauty at some point in human history.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Of course, the garden\u2019s delights are meant to be purely ornamental\u2014no harvesting allowed, much less consumption.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s juniper, whose applications include treating digestive problems and kidney stones; lavender (anxiety, baldness); bee balm (bad breath, colds); mint (cough, toothache); goldenrod (asthma, internal bleeding); and more than a dozen others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Supported by a gift from the Class of \u201971 in honor of its 50th Reunion\u2014the garden was dedicated a year later, at Reunion \u201922\u2014the project was a labor of love for a team of <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbotanicgardens.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell Botanic Gardens<\/a> staff and student workers in its <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbotanicgardens.org\/learn\/cornell-programs\/learning-by-leading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learning by Leading<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with the class (and under the aegis of David Cutter \u201984, BS \u201985, the University\u2019s landscape architect), the project team researched species, designed the layout, and installed the plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their goal: to bring doses of greenery and color to one of the busiest stretches of campus, along Ho route at the beating heart of campus\u2014dovetail with a movement known as <a href=\"https:\/\/health.cornell.edu\/resources\/health-topics\/nature-rx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nature Rx<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With evidence from peer-reviewed studies, it holds that greenery and the outdoors have clear benefits on wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat a great opportunity to give that more visibility, and talk about overall health and wellness,\u201d Cutter says of the Medicinal Garden, \u201cparticularly the impact that spending time in nature has on class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>With the aim of making sure the garden flourishes for years to come, Mulford notes, the designers focused on tried-and-true species that thrive in the region\u2014with many specimens propagated from seeds collected right on campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very successful design,\u201d Cutter observes. \u201cIt really brings attention to the entrance to Cornell Health.
