By Caitlin Hayes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Editor\u2019s note: This has been adapted and condensed from <\/em>a story<\/em><\/a> in the <\/em>Cornell Chronicle.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Even before she applied to Cornell, Chenchen Lu \u201923 was drawn to the Cornell Chimes<\/a> by the large scale of the instrument, which commands the entire Ithaca campus as its audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now a chimesmaster, Lu has greatly expanded that audience by bringing her performances on the chimes to TikTok, amassing a following of more than 140,000 in the last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI didn\u2019t expect so many people to be interested in bells or this kind of music,\u201d says Lu, an information science major in the Cornell Bowers College of Computing and Information Science<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s been rewarding just to see so many people genuinely curious about the instrument and this raw, kind of weird sound quality that I\u2019ve grown to love. It\u2019s also brought more recognition to the instrument and to Cornell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
