But that location\u2014at the center of the distinctive space within Uris Library that boasts ornate iron scrollwork, spiral stairways, crosswalks, and balconies\u2014remains her favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe chairs are different now,\u201d she notes. \u201cBut the view and the sense of quiet and peacefulness are still there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that the Ithaca campus is vast and bucolic\u2014with myriad green spaces, buildings in a variety of architectural styles, and many nooks and crannies betwixt and between\u2014any list of \u201cfavorite spots\u201d will be long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: Our Favorite Corners of Cornell\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pRGNbS1rdDc?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; the alternating busyness and quiet of Ho Plaza; the trees and grassy expanses of the quads; the Balch Arch and Schoellkopf Crescent; sunsets on the Slope; gorge-spanning footbridges; the restrained elegance of the Memorial Room in Willard Straight Hall; White Reading Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou had to be so quiet because of the iron steps and walkways\u2014but it was always special to me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text discovered my second major there, and it changed my academic trajectory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across from Uris is Olin Library and its underground Kroch Library, home to the University\u2019s Asia Collections and the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The below-ground-level walkways, reading rooms, and common areas include spacious views of the upper levels; high above, translucent skylights give hints of the daylight beyond.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen it rained, one could feel the sounds\u2014you could hear and see the drops,\u201d recalls April Tan \u201996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Myron Taylor Hall is home to the famed and formal Law Library, with its wood paneling, plush carpet, quaint desk lamps, chandeliers, and soaring arched Lanning Mosher \u201961, BS \u201962.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though Ken Li \u201994 wasn\u2019t a law student, he often visited the library with a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was so beautiful that we would take study breaks to walk around and enjoy it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Engineering Library in Carpenter Hall\u2014a more austere, mid-century facility\u2014had three levels of dense book stacks until 2011, when it closed its circulation desk and was transformed into a 24-hour study space, optimized for electronics.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The seclusion of those stacks was key to good study habits for Bill Gallagher \u201979\u2014though he notes dryly: \u201cIf someone passed away in there, it would be weeks before the body was found.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin Gamble \u201999, MILR \u201901, returned often to the stacks in the Catherwood Library at the ILR School: &#8220;Nothing better than the focus and solitude I found inside that hidden wp-block-heading\"><strong>Outdoor<\/strong> Idylls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are dozens of natural areas on the 2,300-acre Ithaca campus, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbotanicgardens.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell Botanic Gardens<\/a> to winding paths behind and between buildings and myriad other outdoor gems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor a quiet outdoor meetup with a friend, the Willard Straight Rock Garden offers a touch of a secluded grotto feel right in the midst of a usually busy area,\u201d observes Earle, member of a <a heart,\u201d says Eric Daza \u201900, MPS \u201902.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t hang out there, per se\u2014but I spent countless magical hours with friends roaming through the Risley underworld before, during, and after various and sundry plays, musicals, and performances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Temple of Zeus caf\u00e9 in Goldwin Smith Hall was originally housed in the building\u2019s basement, then on the south side of the main lobby\u2014before moving to the adjacent, newly constructed Klarman Hall atrium in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The popular spot has long been distinguished by its d\u00e9cor of plaster-statue replicas of classical statuary, which have followed it to its various locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div href=\"https:\/\/scl.cornell.edu\/residential-life\/housing\/community-centers\/willard-straight-hall-student-union\/willard-straight-hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willard Straight Hall<\/a>, built in the 1920s as one of the country\u2019s first student unions, remains a hub for campus groups, activities, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of its most fondly recalled enclaves\u2014like the \u201cpot shop\u201d pottery studio, Ivy Room, and Bear\u2019s Den\u2014no longer exist, but mainstays like Cornell Cinema, Okenshields, the browsing library, and dance practice many hours she spent in the Straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I needed a quick snack between classes but funds were low, I could grab some free popcorn from the Campus Activities Resource Center. the 1870s\u2014is home to elegant stained-glass windows, a soaring apse, two organs, and the crypt where several University dignitaries and their families are interred. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in addition to the chapel&#8217;s calming interior, its footprint creates an intimate patch of outdoor space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always loved the little area tucked into the north side\u2014outside the building, between the side door and the memorial chapel,\u201d says Jinny Van Deusen \u201989. \u201cI remember it as filled with ferns and a lovely, meditative spot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI could concentrate on my game, enjoy the pastoral setting of the surrounding woods, and escape the pressure of studying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toward the outskirts of campus are Sapsucker Woods, home to miles of nature trails\u2014and a mecca for birders.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>They include destinations such as North Campus\u2019s Fuertes Observatory (which offers glimpses of the cosmos on regular public viewing nights) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell Lab of Ornithology<\/a>, whose 230-acre Sapsucker Woods sanctuary is a birder\u2019s paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fall Creek Gorge and its several waterfalls pass through the northern parts of campus on the way to the south end of Cayuga Lake.
