Here, he takes on what he describes as one of history\u2019s most important but little-known wars: the campaign culminating in the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/en\/book\/show\/55711554-the-war-that-made-the-roman-empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He chronicles how<\/a>, in the wake of Julius Caesar\u2019s assassination, the power struggle between Mark Antony and Caesar\u2019s designated heir (Octavian, the future Augustus)\u2014as well as Antony\u2019s romantic and political alliance with Cleopatra, Egypt\u2019s queen\u2014led to armed conflict. The opposing forces met in one of the largest naval battles of the ancient world, involving more than 600 ships and nearly 200,000 men. \u201cFew historians can bring such a battle alive better than Strauss,\u201d says <em>Kirkus<\/em>, adding that the book \u201cmust now be considered the most up-to-date history of its subject.&#8221; <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em> calls the volume \u201ca gripping account of the war for control of the Roman Empire,\u201d noting that Strauss \u201chas an eye for telling details and a knack for explaining the era\u2019s complex political alliances and rivalries in clear terms.
