{"id":5545,"date":"2022-03-15T07:39:22","date_gmt":"2022-03-15T12:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?post_type=book&#038;p=5545"},"modified":"2022-03-24T08:23:06","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T13:23:06","slug":"the-economic-weapon","status":"publish","type":"book","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/book\/the-economic-weapon\/","title":{"rendered":"The Economic Weapon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nicholas Mulder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/57615579-the-economic-weapon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this volume from Yale University Press<\/a>, subtitled <em>The Rise of Sanctions as a Tool of Modern War<\/em>, \u201coffers many lessons for Western policy makers today.\u201d It\u2019s the first book by Mulder, a Cornell assistant professor of modern European history. As <em>Foreign Affairs<\/em> observes in a review: \u201cFor those who see economic sanctions as a relatively mild way of expressing displeasure at a country\u2019s behavior, this book, charting how they first emerged as a potential coercive instrument during the first decades of the 20th century, will come as something of a revelation. In an original and persuasive analysis, Mulder shows how isolating aggressors from global commerce and finance was seen as an alternative to war that worked precisely because of the pain it imposed on the target society.
