In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/58153570-gorey-secrets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this volume<\/a> from the University Press of Mississippi, Whyte\u2014himself a prolific creator of illustrated books for kids and a founder of the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco\u2014delves into the artistic and literary inspirations behind Gorey\u2019s work. \u201cMalcolm Whyte has done us all a service by exploring and explaining the incredibly complex tangle of Edward Gorey\u2019s sources, influences, and inspirations,\u201d Frank Robinson, director emeritus of the Johnson Museum, says in a blurb. \u201cEverything is in the mix, from Melville and Lear to Agatha Christie and the Brothers Grimm, from Hogarth and Redon to Matisse and children\u2019s illustrations, as well as the <em>I Ching<\/em>.
