James Ross \u201975, JD \u201982<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ross\u2019s previous novel, 2020\u2019s Hunting Teddy Roosevelt<\/em>, follows the former president on an African safari in which he\u2019s in danger of becoming the prey. Here, the author unspools a mystery<\/a> in a small Upstate New York town that shares a lake (and a long history of cross-border smuggling) with a French-speaking community in Qu\u00e9bec. It\u2019s fall 2002, and two brothers\u2014one a Manhattan lawyer on vacation, the other the sheriff in their hometown\u2014team up to investigate the murder of a local man whose body is found in the lake. Along the way, the lawyer reconnects with his high school flame, who\u2019s the victim\u2019s sister\u2014and who works at a biotech company that may be involved in the crime; the firm has been engaging in shady deals to stave off bankruptcy, and the dead man recently broke into its building. \u201cMemorable characters drive an atmospheric thriller,\u201d says Kirkus<\/em>, noting that \u201cthe story never lingers as it forges ahead to a gratifying conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
